Some good news for readers north of the border: We'll soon start selling Barnes & Noble eBooks to customers in Canada.

The update, which will take place around Dec. 1, will allow people living in or visiting Canada to shop our eBook store and download eBooks to their B&N eReader-supported devices, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry, Mac, and PC.

That includes nook, too, though we are not selling nook in Canada (or anywhere outside of the United States) at this time. If you're using a nook in Canada, you will be able to sync to your B&N eBooks library and access our eBook store via Wi-Fi.

We know there's an incredible interest from readers who want to buy from our eBook store outside the United States, and we are looking at our options for international sales. For now, though, we remind international travelers that they can access their online eBooks library and download already-purchased content while they're outside the United States. nook owners can access their online Library over Wi-Fi while outside the country as well.

Happy eReading.

Good luck with this. I live in the US Virgin Islands and we cannot even order ebooks using the Internet. The only way that I am able to order them is using my iPhone and the ATT 3G network. If I use WiFi my order is rejected because the "United States" Virgin Islands is not part of the United States.

To make matters worse, the Sales Audit Department doesn't have a clue. But don't worry, they will get back to you with an answer within 24-48 hours. NOT!

If there are all these restrictions on sales of ebooks, why is it that I have been purchasing eReader ebooks for years while living in Canada, and reading them on my old Palm with never a problem?

And now that Kindle will be available for shipping to Canadian addresses, will nook offer this option sooner rather than later?

Hi, I'm from Canada and looking to start using eBooks, but I'm wondering about Pre-ordering, I like that with the paper books, that at online sites like B&N you can pre-order then months ahead of time(Ie Master of Fire by Angela Knight), I'm wonder if this option is also available for ebooks?

Oh... that's great news!  Whatever..NOT REALLY! B&N you're soooo off the mark! I've been buying Kindle conntent while living in Japan since the Kindle 1 launched. And now I can use the new Kindle do do it on the fly, so I don't even need the Wifi. Love the nook design. But a true wireless device that an be used  ANY-WHERE... I'll stick with Kindle. You guys need to figure out a) what century it is, and b) that all consumers and users of technology devices don't livein the U.S.! What a joke!

This is wonderful news!! Next step? Make the Nook available to Canadians. It looks to be a great product and I can guarantee you would sell like hotcakes up north!

My book club will be reading Sag Harbor next month, and I'm keen to get an ereader, so am looking at both the Kindle and the Nook.  When I checked Amazon's website, Sag Harbor was not available for purchase as an ebook in Canada (but was in the US).  With B&N expanding ebooks to Canada, will there be the same limitations, i.e., will I be able to get Sag Harbor from B&N in Canada?

I tried to order an ebook today, and was told that I must have a U.S. billing address to order. When will this happen?

by eilujJT on ‎12-03-2009 03:03 PM

Can you please give an estimated date that this will happen, i.e. is this before Christmas? I would like to ask for Barnes and Noble gift cards for Christmas, but if eBooks are not available in Canada I do not want it. Thanks.

I just tried to buy an eBook and I got a message that it is only available to people with a US residence. Any idea when this might happen (or if it really is going to happen)?

I'm starting to think B&N is full of it. I still cannot download an e-book in Canada, and I see the nook orders are delayed. Mine is set to ship on Dec 18th, but I would bet my dog that it will get pushed back like the earlier orders. Not that I would know, because I haven't been sent an e-mail confirming my shipment date. I don't like being lied to. This is a joke.

Although B&N have told me via email on a problem report that eBooks can now be ordered in Canada, the eBook bookstore will NOT allow a Canadian credit card to be used.  Here is an edited version of the error message:

! You must reside within the United States to receive this item. We currently do not support international, U.S. territory or APO/FPO billing addresses.

Select the billing address for this credit card. Billing address must be in the United States.

More info.  I reported the credit card mailing address to B&N support, and the response was:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting us.

Based on the situation you described, we feel that the difficulties you
are experiencing would be resolved best by contacting us by phone.

We ask that you call us at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665) and request
Digital Support.  We are available Monday through Friday from 8AM to
11PM EST, Saturdays and Sundays 9AM to 11PM EST.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have
caused and look forward to hearing from you.

However, every time I call the 1-800 it fails to reach a rep, and the message says "unable to complete, try again" or words to that effect.  So I resubmitted the problem to Support by email and asked for information about "how, when, if" B&N will really start selling eBooks to Canadians.

Latest message from B&N support on Dec 23, 2009, after a number of responses saying Canadian orders enabled on Dec 9.  Finally, the internal communication mixup at B&N may be getting addressed.  Note that this latest response contradicts the beginning message in this thread:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for inquiring about ebook.

Currently, ebook is not available for sale outside of the United States.

We appreciate your interest and suggest that you check our website at for the most current updates.

They said from the beginning that the nook wouldn't be sold in Canada, but that we would be able to use one within Canada. So, does this mean that ebooks are supposed to be available now, starting from Dec 9th, but there was an internal snafu? Doe this mean this problem will soon be fixed?

I sent a message to the administrator who started this thread earlier in the month, and she assured me that ebooks would be available to us by the 18th. That was another lie.

Also, I can't reach customer service from Canada, either. These guys are a joke

I was just able to place an order for eBook "Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference" by Malcolm Gladwell and my billing address is in Canada.

Looks like Barnes & Noble is ready to serve their friendly Eskimo neighbours to the north. Enjoy!
