Described as, “a history book that is reassuringly epic in scope but refreshingly short in length,” today’s Free Fridays selection is the bestselling A Short History of the World by Christopher Lascelles.

There are thousands (maybe millions?) of book pages devoted to Abraham Lincoln. Same could be said for Churchill, the Mayans, and more. But what Christopher Lascelles aims to do in his compact compendium is offer a history of the world that fits our time-strapped lives. Leave the doorstop biographies to serious historians; this book gives the rest of us just the ammunition we need for our next cocktail party conversation.

Rather than just listing dates and places, Lascelles turns world history into a story. His narrative starts with the Big Bang and hits all of the high notes between then and now. You’ll easily remember everything he covers, because the people and places come vividly to life thanks to the author’s talent for spinning a good yarn. Visual learners will especially appreciate the 32 specially-drawn maps that help put the historical events into context.

Free Fridays Recommends

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Christopher recommends:

NOOK owners: go to shop and search for “Christopher Lascelles” to download this illuminating and accessible history book.

A compact history of the world sounds like an excellent addition to my Nook's history and reference shelf!  Thanks Jeremy and B&N!

Also thanks to Spec for consolidating the freebie list each week, to Butterflly13 for all of the extras as well, and to all the others who contribute.

I like non-fiction books at night before I go to sleep. This should fit the bill nicely. I got the daily find yesterday about Lincoln so I should have many evenings of reading now. Thanks to all that post here.

Good Morning Everyone:

Today its a rainy day at Puerto Rico, but I hope all of you have a great day ..

by Moderator dhaupt on ‎10-19-2012 09:10 AM

Jeremy and B&N.com thanks.

You know History was always very boring in school and it's a shame that I had to wait until I grew up to find how learning history in novels is my way to go.

But I'm always willing to give non-fiction a try, there are some that I really loved.

And it's a way to hang out with all the great peeps here at the Nook room too.

Happy Friday everyone

by judy9569 on ‎10-19-2012 09:19 AM

Thanks Jeremy, Jeff, and B&N!  Also thanks to Spec for consolidating the freebie list each week and to Butterflly13 for all of the extras as well.   I really enjoy the chance to find new genres to try as well as my favorite. :smileyhappy:

What is the daily find?  Don't know about that.

Judy

by mariak22 on ‎10-19-2012 09:26 AM

Judy9569, the Daily Find is something B&N has been doing. They showcase a different book every day and sell it at a discounted price for just that day, usually for $1.99 or $2.99. You can find it by going to the Nook Books area.It will be listed near the top of the menu on the left.

You may also want to make a habit of checking the Freebies discussion thread that Spec mentions in his post. Many books (especially those Baker publishing) are only free for a day or so, so by the time Friday rolls around they're no longer free.

Also, thanks to Jeremy, Spec, JroJeff and Butterfly13 for posting the other freebies every wek.

I would like to see a more seasonal selection of books.  While this is a cool free friday book, I would have much rather had something Halloween, Horror, Fall themed.
