This first book in Gray’s Heart of a Hero series explores the complex and endearing love that grows between Clayton—a ranch foreman—and the woman he’s sworn to protect from her stepfather’s advances. Clayton isn’t the type of man who can stand idly by and watch the innocent Vanessa become her notorious stepfather’s next victim. So he sweeps her away on a westward journey—pursued by a dangerous man, and growing closer to Vanessa with each mile that passes underfoot.
You’ll be moved and entranced by the tender love that these two souls grow to share.
Free Fridays Recommends
Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Shelley recommends:
I read Gone with the Wind the summer after seventh grade on a three week bus tour of the western United States. Oh, gosh, did I love that book! Day after day, while the plains of west Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona zipped by, I’d keep my nose in Margaret Mitchell’s story. Because of that book, I became fascinated by the Civil War, and life for survivors of the Civil War. Of course, I fell in love with Rhett Butler, too. Because, well, he was Rhett Butler!
Gone with the Wind made a huge impression on me. It was the first time I found myself transported to another time, and another place through the pages of a book. When I wrote A Texan’s Promise, I felt much the same way writing it as I did reading Gone with the Wind, all those years ago. I was immersed in another time, where almost anything was possible. For that reason, A Texan’s Promise remains a special book to me…almost as much as Gone with the Wind still is.

I wish Barnes and Noble would do a better job more clearly marking what books are Christian books. I have no desire to read them and I have to scroll way down and scruntinize the keywords and the reviews to figure it out. I also wish BN would separate out books by real, mainstream publishers and books that are self-published or published by one of these fly by night Internet publishers. I am sick of not being able to exclude those from my search results because then I get stuck with a book that is poorly edited and full of grammar and spelling errors.

Thank you everyone! I always download a handful of great possibilities on Fridays. Just finished two that were offered in previous weeks and they were wonderful! I like the opportunity to sample the work of authors that I might not otherwise find.
