With Halloween just days away, it’s only fitting that this week’s Free Fridays selection—Alice in Zombieland by Nickolas Cook—is a frightful literary tale.
Fans of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece will recognize the framework of this macabre story: young girl finds herself on a mysterious and magical adventure and learns life lessons from an odd cast of characters along the way. But Cook’s illustrated retelling is something much more sinister than the original. Now instead of chasing a white rabbit down his hole, Alice is following a black rat through a graveyard. Along the way, she encounters all manner of undead characters—both human and animal—and a zombie army controlled by the malicious Queen of Hearts.
Alice in Zombieland stands out among the many recent zombie books thanks to its wonderfully depraved illustrations and a dark twist on one of my favorite classic tales.

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! This week it's actually the book's talented illustrator, Brent Cardillo, who recommended a favorite title:
Jerry Yang is the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event champion. I picked up his autobiography, All In, hoping for a few tips to improve my game. Instead, I found a thrilling, harrowing, and ultimately inspiring story of survival. Yang was a small child growing up in Laos when he and the people of his village were forced to flee for their lives from approaching Communist forces. Yang's father, the village leader, ably steers the group through the myriad dangers of the jungle, with the goal of reaching a Thai refugee camp. I found myself so engrossed in their perilous quest that I forgot all about cards! But they are in there: Jerry Yang's unlikely win at the Main Event, and his subsequent charitable work, are chronicled as well. Yang's book is not a poker instructional, but it does give the reader a few lessons in life.NOOK owners: go to shop and search for “Nickolas Cook” to download this ideal Halloween read.
