“Elegantly constructed, skillfully written, and absolutely impossible to stop reading.” – Booklist (starred review)

In the near future, the government has created a virtual-reality military training ground called the Demi-Monde, where troops prepare for urban warfare. To train them for the worst imaginable scenarios, the virtual war zone is led by tyrants who are modeled on some of history’s most evil characters. It’s truly a chamber of horrors.

Now the President’s daughter has been drawn into the Demo-Monde, and the dangers of the effective but circumspect program are brought to light. As a rescue effort ensues, it's clear that the boundary between this powerful virtual world and the real world is breaking down, putting civilization at great risk.

The highly-anticipated book in this remarkable series, The Shadow Wars, is available for pre-order now.

Free Fridays Recommends

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Rod recommends:

i love free fridays!!  i have also discovered that if you "buy" a book, there will be recommended titles that you can pick up after that, and so on and so on...i think today alone i have downloaded over 40 titles.  i tend to download all of the free selections that folks post.  they took the time to put the titles up there, least i can do is download.  i may never read them, but those folks thought they might benefit us so why not download them!

I love Free Fridays! Ever since I went to my local B&N Nook owners class I have been uploading one or two books a week. Add those to the books I have purchased this past year and I have well over a 1200 books! My local store manager said I have the most he's ever seen - not sure if this is good or bad. As I am a voracious reader, and have read all but maybe fifteen of them I would say it's bad....

It's been a part of my weekly ritual to check in here.  So many thanks to the author and contributers.  I usually manage to grab 2 or 3 books weekly, and it's started me on many enjoyable authors and series.

Keep it up.  I do look forward to it.

This week, I think my favorite of the one-star reviews was the one where the reviewer complained that he read the first couple of chapters but couldn't figure out what was going on, then said that this sort of thing is written for younger readers. *Scratches head* So is he saying "Those darn whippersnappers are smarter than me?" Is he saying that because they're younger, their brains are more flexible? :smileyvery-happy:

Usually when readers say "This is meant for younger readers!" it's meant as an insult -- they usually use that to mean it's more simplistic. Now I'm beginning to wonder about those reviews as well. :smileywink: Anyway, I'm in my 40s, and I've found that a lot of those books meant for "younger readers" are better written than a lot of "adult" books. Ask anyone who writes for young readers, and they'll point out it's very challenging, and that their readers are more selective than many adults give them credit for.

Hello,

Thank you very much for all the free books! Free Fridays Rock!!!

Here is one of the free books I encountered and enjoyed:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/44-jools-sinclair/1100534861?ean=2940011231957

It is a young adult book, so my 12yr old loved it too :smileyhappy:

Sorry if it is a repeat.

Happy Weekend!

READERS BEWARE!!!  After speaking with B&N customer service, I have learned there is now a $.01 "publisher"/digital surcharge for all free NOOK  books (even the Free Friday book).  This amount will not be deducted from the gift cards we have on our accounts.  It is placed on the credit card that  is on our NOOK accounts.

I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up before credit card statements arrived.

Happy Reading:smileyhappy:

Thought I'd share... I have been looking at this book for awhile and was tickled to see it "free".

Looks like a good one - cool.

I've never been charged a penny for any free ebooks, so I don't know what that comment from just1morepgplz was about.

I would like to hereby complain about the complainers who are complaining about people who are complaining.  No one had better complain about my complaining or I'll give them something to complain about.
