I've always been inspired by Gerald Durrell - his love of animals and his love of words - both providing strong threads through my aspirations to become a vet and write about the pets I've treated. The eight stories in Marrying Off Mother demonstrate Durrell's ability to observe the eccentricities of people, none more so than in his encounter with an aging Memphis belle. While his prize-truffling pig I fear will slip into my subconscious only to reappear in a variant form as I finish writing the third in my pet series. But then Durrell's writing, with its warmth and wit, has always had the ability to get under my skin. It may do the same for you. You have been warned.
