“A unique, entertaining, emotionally powerful, deftly crafted, highly recommended work that will leave the reader looking eagerly toward Laurel's next foray into the mystery/suspense genre.”

-Midwest Book Reviewer

Jane Perry is engineered to solve crimes—she’s smart, decisive, and doesn’t let emotions get in the way. But her newest assignment will call on other skills, most notably, acting as a protector and mother figure to a wounded girl.

Young Emily Lawrence witnessed her parents’ murders, and homicide detective Jane Perry’s been assigned to keep her safe, while trying to get her to divulge the repressed memories of the event. While Perry normally stops at nothing to get to the bottom of a case, this reticent child poses a special challenge. Perry’s not known for her maternal skills, and playing surrogate mother to a young crime victim is not in her repertoire.

This unusual case, with incredibly high stakes, forces Perry to confront some of her own deepest insecurities, while keeping her endangered young charge safe, and putting an end to a murderer’s despicable career.

Another compelling and complex Jane Perry mystery awaits in the just-released Knowing, available now for NOOK.

Free Fridays Recommends

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Laurel recommends:

A few years ago, I bought my husband a few books by Irish mystery author, John Connolly. I then decided to check out the first chapter in one of them and was hooked from that day forward. What I love about Connolly is that his writing and observations of individuals are exceptionally poetic and demonstrate to me that he's a student of human nature. His stories also engage with a mystical/paranormal edge, which I love, since my Jane Perry series has a similar undercurrent.

There's a lyrical quality to Connolly's work and I find myself highlighting quotes or passages that are insightful and memorable. One of them, I still keep close by on my desk: "For the voice of the present contains the echo of the past."

While it's not the first in his series, The Lovers is one of my favorites because of its expertly interwoven story.

NOOK owners: go to shop and search for “Laurel Dewey” to download her complex mysteries.

Thank you Jeremy and B&N for another wonderful Free Friday selection. What a great way to get to know a new author by making the first in the series free.

And who knows maybe it'll show up on General Fiction's new monthly Nook feature :smileyhappy:

I always look forward to visiting the Nook blog on Fridays to get my free book and to see what all the peeps here are up to.

Have a great weekend!!
