Every reader craves that book you can't put down. Gods and Beasts by Denise Mina did that for me. A rich brew of Glasgow noir packed with emotional cliffhangers and genuinely clever twists, it's beautifully written too.

I love crime thrillers and have never read any of Val McDermid's books, so this is an excellent choice this week for me! Although it is #7 in the Hill/Jordan series, according to the reviews I have read, the author quickly gets you in the loop, so not having read any of the series doesn't seem to be an issue at all.
