The power and elegance of Abbott’s prose alone would be enough for me to recommend her, but her voice is what’s really devastating. It just flattens anything else that might be rolling around in your head. Dare Me is her first contemporary novel, and it uses the vehicle of cheerleading to examine the menace and dangers of girlhood ties and dramas, but with a thriller’s punch. The plot is propulsive — we aren’t meandering here, but actually going somewhere — and deftly entertains while still shedding light on the human condition. The combined lyricism, tone, and narrative of this story just sang to my literary bliss point. I couldn’t get it out of my head for days.
