In the city of Ninavel, people practice many kinds of magic. It’s a land beset by magicians plying their trade. But the bordering country of Alathia has outlawed all forms of magic, imposing harsh penalties on anyone who practices the craft.

The adept smuggler Dev has carved a niche for himself as a guide along the Whitefire Crossing that connects the two lands. But his guide duties prove the perfect cover for a lucrative smuggling business as well. Contraband magic charms are a valuable asset in strictly-controlled Alathia.

Now Dev's smuggling skills are being put to an even bigger test, as he’s asked to fulfill a friend’s dying wish by transporting a young apprentice who’s being hunted by a powerful mage. The young man, Kiran, posses the knowledge and skills that are forbidden in Alathia, and if he and Dev are intercepted along the way, they both face dire consequences.

Dev and Kiran’s harrowing journey awaits in this week’s Free Fridays selection, and you can continue the adventure in Schafer’s just-published sequel, The Tainted City.

Thank you, everyone for sharing these free books with us. I really appreciate the time it takes to post them. I hope none of you or your loved ones were affected by the storm. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for Free Fridays.  Have enjoyed many selections and have quite a few to read yet.  I do wish there were more non-fiction choices.  My favorite so far has been The Trivia Lovers Guide to the World by Gary Fuller.  It was informative and so much fun.

Thank you, as always, for so many lovely free reads. I hope Spec is alright.... my heart and prayers go out to all those suffering under the nightmare of H. Sandy.

Wow... so eerie not to have Spec post! I hope everyone is ok. We just moved from NY to NC and somehow out of the path of this hurricane!! Positive thoughts and hopes go out to all those effected! :catsad:

Thank you to everyone, and to SoccerGal_94 for her selections.  This is a great community and like others have shared, we send positive thoughts, prayers and hopes for those affected by Sandy.  Spec, we all hope you are well, and that your family is also well.

Is anyone else having a problem getting this to download? I think this is the first time I've encountered this problem. When I hit the download now button, it greys out for a second, but I never get the confirmation window, etc, etc. It hasn't shown up in my B&N library either. I've tried several times. Any thoughts?

@Arctic_Ranger - I had a similar experience.  I would click download (from my computer, not my nook) and the web page would be kind of frozen.  Then I'd get a message, but when I went in to my library, both last night and today, the books were all there.  I just checked my Nook and it looks like they all loaded.  It was odd, though.  I hope that you find your books!

Thanks again! Hope all our Eastern friends are making it.  See everyone next week. :smileyhappy:

It really sucks that this is no longer Free.  I had no access to the internet because of Hurricane Sandy and I was looking forward to this.  You could've extended the offer a few days.  Grrr....

Has anyone heard from Spec?  Starting to get worried about him/her...

by CourtneySchafer on ‎11-07-2012 12:39 PM

I'm the author of The Whitefire Crossing and I just wanted to say to Lee_Lee_Vee and anyone else prevented by hurricane Sandy from getting online in time to take advantage of B&N's Free Friday offer...if you contact me at courtney (at) courtneyschafer (dot) com, I'd be happy to see about getting you a Nook-compatible ecopy of the novel.  The storm caused more than enough disruption to people's lives - I don't want this to be added to the tally, not when I can do something about it.

Thank you very much for your kind, kind generous offer Courtney.  Many people I'm sure will appreicate this.  We sure do enjoy our books we get to read, it's a great escape from real world pain and horror.  Take care and look forward to more of your books.
