In the city of Ninavel, people practice many kinds of magic. It’s a land beset by magicians plying their trade. But the bordering country of Alathia has outlawed all forms of magic, imposing harsh penalties on anyone who practices the craft.
The adept smuggler Dev has carved a niche for himself as a guide along the Whitefire Crossing that connects the two lands. But his guide duties prove the perfect cover for a lucrative smuggling business as well. Contraband magic charms are a valuable asset in strictly-controlled Alathia.
Now Dev's smuggling skills are being put to an even bigger test, as he’s asked to fulfill a friend’s dying wish by transporting a young apprentice who’s being hunted by a powerful mage. The young man, Kiran, posses the knowledge and skills that are forbidden in Alathia, and if he and Dev are intercepted along the way, they both face dire consequences.
Dev and Kiran’s harrowing journey awaits in this week’s Free Fridays selection, and you can continue the adventure in Schafer’s just-published sequel, The Tainted City.
Free Fridays Recommends
Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Courtney recommends:
NOOK owners: go to shop and search for “Courtney Schafer” to download her captivating fantasy adventures.

Excited for this week's book! Although, I've got such a growing back log of books, not sure when I will read this one, but that's not such a terrible problem to have.

Thank you all for the free books. I noticed in Butterfly's post that The Fey by Claudia Hall Christian is listed as free. If you only get one book it should be this one and once you read this you will want to read the rest of her books as well - I have and they are all great!

Oh boy, thanks B&N and Jeremy. I LOVE fantasy and I think after all the reality this country and especially the East Coast has gone through this past week we could all benefit from a little fantasy in our lives.
My thoughts are with all of our friends here who were affected by the storm.
I'm glad to see that B&N is up and running even though they got hit pretty hard too.

The first two books of Kameron Hurley's Bel Dame Apocrypha trilogy, God's War and Infidel, are free until November 8, 2012. This promotion is directly through the publisher, Night Shade Books. You can go to the link below for the information on how to download the books.
http://www.kameronhurley.com/get-free-copies-of-go
I believe that you will be added the Night Shade's email list but that's not a bad price for two free books. The third book in the series, Rapture, just came out on October 23 so if you like these books you can finish the trilogy all for the cost of one book.
If you've never side loaded an eBook onto your Nook before it's really easy. First, you'll want to download the ePub version of these books. Next, you simply connect your Nook to your computer via the USB cable that came with your Nook when you bought it. Finally, copy or drag the Gods_War and Infidel files into MyNOOK > My Files > Books.
After you disconnect your Nook from your computer you will go to Library > My Stuff > My Files > Books to see the books you copied over. They will appear in your Nook's library just like any other book after you open them the first time.
I haven't read either of these books yet but I've heard a lot of good things about God's War and had it on my 'to read' list. I've seen the series described as science fiction, fantasy and even fantasy scifi. Any way you slice it, this looks like a series that I want to jump into.
