Longtime mystery-reader favorite Mo Hayder recently won the prestigious Edgar Award for her gripping Jack Caffery novel Gone. Today’s Free Fridays selection, Birdman, is the first book in Hayder's impressive detective series.
Hayder brings panache to the serial killer detective thriller—pitting a haunted, unflappable London detective, Jack Caffery, against a sui generis serial killer known as the Birdman. When five women’s ritualistically-murdered bodies are discovered within steps of each other, Caffery immediately knows that this will be the case of a lifetime. But most disturbing is the fact that no one seems to be looking for the victims—they don’t fit any missing persons reports.

Hannibal Lecter is sunk so deep in our collective psyche it’s easy to forget there was ever a world without him. Easy, likewise, to think of Red Dragon as just Lecter’s introduction to the world and little more than a clever thriller. Yet this is far far greater than its subject matter and by rights should be read as a piece of classic literature. By all means enjoy the chills, thrills and twists if you’re a dedicated thriller fan, but if you’re a highbrow lit fan don’t be put off by its reputation. Try it. Look past the subject matter and revel in Harris’ style which is top notch.

Love it that the freebies are the first in a series - I always love to start a new series, but just can't start in the middle. Checking Free Fridays is the first think I do every Friday morning - thanks Jeremy, Spec, Jfro-Jeff and butterfly 13!

I don't usually comment on this blog, but I decided to get my two cents in today. I have appreciated the Free Fridays every since I got my Nook Color in December of 2010. In fact, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I have not downloaded the Free Friday book. I also appreciate spec, jfrojeff and butterfly13 and their work in putting up great lists of more free books. Thanks for sharing, everyone, and happy reading!

Butterfly13 I hope you will continue to add books to this blog. I depend on all the free selections due to my budget and although I often see duplicates it is always nice to be steered to more!!
When asked the Nook vs. Kindle I still feel there is more free content available on Nook! Another hint for finding more free content is to search Nook Books using 0.00 and then narrowing with key words or author names!

So much to read, so little time! Thanks all for your posts, I've only bought two 99c books since I got my Nook last year and have far more than I can ever get through.

Thank you so much Jeremy, and Spec. Jeff, I'll miss your list. Butterfly, thank you for sharing. I am going to enjoy your selections. All of you are very much appreciated. I know that y'all don't have to take time to find free books for all of us, I think it's wonderful that you all do. I find so many books each Friday. There are times that I may not feel that I will like a book, when that happens, I don't download the book. I move onto one of the MANY others we have to choose from. There are genre's that I would not have thought that I would like, I read one of the selections that one of you posted and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it. Thanks again.
