“Meyer is a serious writer who richly deserves the international reputation he has built.”

The Washington Post

When Emma Le Roux sees her brother’s face flash on her TV screen, connected with the killing of four poachers and a witch doctor, she’s shocked by more than just the crime. Her brother disappeared 20 years ago, and Emma never thought she’d see him alive again. Soon after his shocking reappearance, Emma is attacked in her Cape Town home, and she’s convinced there’s a connection between these two unlikely events.

Enter Lemmer, an ex-con who makes a living as a body guard for rich South Africans. Emma hires Lemmer to accompany her on a mission to prove her brother is alive and innocent. Where Emma sees a decades-old conspiracy, Lemmer sees a naïve and untrustworthy woman bent on misguided revenge. But he needs the money, and she needs the protection. As they peel back the layers of corruption, greed and international tension that surround Emma’s brother’s predicament, Lemmer soon realizes that this assignment is far bigger and more dangerous than he could have ever imagined.

Once you’ve entered Deon Meyer’s enthralling South African landscape, you’ll want to read all of his internationally-bestselling thrillers, including his latest critically-acclaimed novel, Trackers.

Free Friday Recommends

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Deon Meyer recommends:

His name is Johan Theorin, the book is Echoes from the Dead, and it’s my favourite crime fiction of the past year.

A child’s shoe arrives in the mail, and brings hope that Julia Davidsson’s son might still be alive. The child disappeared twenty years ago, but the mystery goes back much further. Perhaps to the Second World War. Set on the Swedish island of Öland (Theorin spent his childhood summers there), Julia and her ageing father try to piece together the past, and soon someone wants to stop them. Echoes from the Dead was voted Best First Mystery Novel 2007 by the authors and critics of the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers, and won the CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger at the 2009 Crime Thriller Awards.

NOOK owners: go to shop and search for “Deon Meyer” to download his heart-pounding thrillers.

This week's Free Friday selection looks like an excellent book. I'm anxious to check it out.

Thanks for the links to other freebies, Spec, but you're correct, not all of them are still free. And, some of the links took me to a different book. Sill, it's quite a list...lots of happy reading! :-)

Alicia: Sorry about that. With list that big I must have made a mistake (as far as link leading to different books).

by BrandieC on ‎10-07-2011 11:30 AM

Jeremy, the page for the Free Friday selection is showing that the book is getting poor reviews because of a download problem; according to the posters, the book is only downloading the cover over and over.  I haven't tried it myself yet because I'm at work, but since I didn't see any comment here, I wanted to be sure the B&N team was aware there may be an issue.

by Starmusica on ‎10-07-2011 11:40 AM

Spec-

how do you compile the list? I was sad to miss one or two of these. I would love to check earlier in the week before they stop being free.

Thank you!!!

@Starmusica:

The best way to stay current on free NOOKbooks is to check out the Free NOOKbooks thread on the NOOKbook discussion board.  There are a number of regular posters on that thread who let us all know when they find a limited-time free NOOKbook.

@ brandieC thank you!!

Thanks for the free book b&n. Well this wekk has no complaining so far (Glad for that). Amazon seems to have the same complainers. I love the free books. SPEC you think you can help me with some free SCI-FI wouldd love it. Thank you both a bunch.

LJohnsonWV: The freebies located really depend on publishers who set the promotional prices across booksellers (main one being b&n and amazon). If the publsihers don't make sci-fi books free then they don't show up.

But are you aware of Baen Free Library (alt link)? You'd have to side load those epubs but I understand the offerring is pretty good:

by BrandieC on ‎10-07-2011 07:23 PM

@LJohnsonWV:

I've sent you a PM regarding another source for free SF eBooks.

by JoeCA on ‎10-08-2011 02:45 AM

@spec:

The "Building Data Science Teams" book can be ordered from O'Reilly (it is an O'Reilly book) for free as well. Unlike from B&N, books from the O'Reilly website come without DRM.

O'Reilly (not to be confused with a TV personality with the same last name) is the top technical book publisher. As a techie, I have a lot of their printed books, and nowadays also a bunch of e-books, that I sideloaded on my nook.

by ThirstyFlea on ‎10-08-2011 11:43 AM

Thank you to both Jeremy and Spec! Great selections, and great variety!! I downloaded a bunch of them from all genres- love to mix it up!

by on ‎10-08-2011 12:36 PM

JoeCA: B&N only puts DRM on e-books when the publisher requires it. O'Reilly e-books from B&N are DRM-free.

What about "Review" is so difficult?

Jeremy, please point the moderators to the mess the "readers" have made over there.
