nook.JPGWe're extremely pleased to announce Barnes & Noble is expanding the overall NOOK eBook Reader experience with the addition of new firsts and features.

Included in NOOK Version 1.3 software (available now) is the breakthrough Read In Store (Beta) experience where you can browse complete eBooks (and soon periodicals) in your local Barnes & Noble store at no cost! NOOK automatically connects to the fast and free Wi-Fi® and you're free to read any parts of any available eBook for up to an hour per day! You'll find lots of great titles, from the current bestsellers to classics, as we have more content available from more than 200 publishers including all the major publishing houses.

We've also enhanced Wi-Fi® connectivity so you connect to even more hotspots and rolled out a basic Web browser (Beta).

Plus, we've added some fun and challenging games -- our first android apps. Sudoku anyone? Or, how about chess -- pit your knight, queen, or rook against NOOK!

We've also made additional reading and device performance enhancements including improved page turn speed, faster access to previously opened eBooks, enhanced color touch screen navigation and more.

You can see how these enhancements -- combined with access to more than one million titles, free 3G wireless, an easy to read E-Ink® screen, exclusive LendMe Technology, free shipping, and the convenience of being able to try NOOK in any Barnes & Noble store -- make it the "#1 pick for e-readers" (Money Magazine).

The new features and additional enhancements are available with the updated NOOK software now available via manual download at www.nook.com/update. If your NOOK is registered and has Wi-Fi® connectivity (Airplane mode should be OFF and Wi-Fi® should be turned ON and connected to a hotspot), the device will automatically download the software and install it on your NOOK within the next week. If connected to Wi-Fi® and you’d like to get the update sooner, you can tap ‘Check for new B&N content’ under My Library. However, if the update does not start automatically, please try again in a couple of hours.

The process takes approximately 5-7 minutes via Wi-Fi® or 4-5 minutes for the manual download (depending on your connection). You should NOT turn your NOOK off while the new software is being downloaded. Once the software update is completed, your NOOK will automatically restart and display the Home screen. The software update will preserve your personal settings, including your registered account information, content, display settings, and Wi-Fi® settings.

Then visit your local Barnes & Noble store, grab a comfortable chair and your favorite beverage and enjoy our exciting Read In Store experience and download exclusive More In Store content too.

This rocks! I turned it out and it auto-downloaded! I hadn't even checked the site for future updates.

The web browser is working great. I can't believe how well the e-ink portrays things. Scrolling on the touch screen is so seamless.

The games are a cute add-on. Especially Sudoku!

Thanks B&N!

LOVE THE NEW UPDATE!

Love the update.  The software updated seemlessly and everything is better.  True, it still doesn't have all the features I would like, but it is a big step in the right direction.   When the nook came out I danced back and forth trying to decide between this and the kindle.  These frequent software updates are letting me know that B&N are serious about this new direction and that I bought the right e-reader.  Thanks!

I love my Nook! After doing the download I didnt have any problems opening books or freezing up. Considering im a college student it is cool having the web browser , i dont have to worry about having my laptop and my nook at the sametime all i need is the nook and the games are cool, i may not use them often but if im bored i can use them. I got the nook because i love reading but having the new features isnt a problem, i think its cool and sooner then later they will probably update it even better.

I couldn't care less about a chess game that has 3 difficult levels, but some of the other updated features are neat. I wish they had addressed my main complaints:

- Freezing!!!

- Organizing contents and creating folders!

- I cannot use my OWN wifi connection at home, not even with the software update!!!

Sojaded, yes apparently you are mising something.  On either side of the nook e-ink display are 4 buttons that have >  and < respectively.  These are page turning buttons.  You don't need to use the touch screen to turn pages.  Although you can by swiping your finger (putting your finger on the screen then quickly moving it) in the direction you wish to turn the page (right or left) when the touch screen is black.

When the touch screen is active, you scroll though large lists in the (chapters for example) by swiping (putting your finger on the screen then quickly moving it) up or down.  The faster you move your finger, the more it will scroll.

Can't get the update to download at work.  I hope I can at home.

by MzHokie on ‎04-23-2010 02:30 PM

for some reason I have never been able to connect to my home WiFi so this update doesn't do much for me but I'm all for pages turning faster and software moving smoother.

For whatever reason, my wifi connection did not take 5-7 minutes.  After 30 minutes I went ahead and downloaded the update manually and dropped it in the Nook on my computer.  I had to delete the minimal amount downloaded via wifi.  It took less than a minute to manually download to nook.  I suggest this if you have any issues like I did.  Also this new update gave me double copies of my B&N library.   Now I need to go in and delete my multiple copies of my ebooks.  That's my only complaint so far.  I do like the page swiping...that's nice.

I'm looking forward to downloading and playing with the update later today.  haven't gotten into the habit of bringing my Nook to work.  Of course, working in a Library I do have other things to read.

I agree with some others that the new functions look cool, but I'd rather the 'freezing' issue could be worked on.  I haven't had to do it the past few days (knock on wood!), but it does make wanting to take the Nook outside my home a difficult decision.

I love this update. it appears that the nook is more responsive and page refreshes are snappier.

I really like the new audio and wifi buttons on main menu.

There is still no password protection on purchases. (this should actually be a feature on the BN website to disable and enable the ability to make purchases automatic or require a password.)

The install was great I simply Checked for new BN content then later went to the settings page and noticed that the update had started.

After the download the install process started automatically and took what seemed like 3 minutes maybe even less.

Great work BN this update is a slick improvement.

Love the new update!  I can't figure out how you get email on the web browser though.  Can anyone help?  It's not covered in the new user manual.
