When a young knight, William Marshal, saves the life of Henry II's queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, he's thrust into a life of servitude to the throne that few, if any, ever surpassed. The chivalrous William is rewarded with the position of arms tutor to Prince Henry, which proves to be a difficult task. A chain of events puts William in the middle of a tumultuous and dangerous period for the royal family, and he proves his loyalty and good judgment time and again. Elizabeth Chadwick does an excellent job of fictionalizing the real-life 12th century drama in her well-researched and captivating novel.
