nook_front-view_200.jpgThere’s a lot of news this week, so we’re going to dive right in.

nook Demo Units Arrive: First, we’re happy to report that nook demo units are in (or arriving in) all Barnes & Noble stores, and will be available for customer viewing beginning today. Use the nook store locator to get information about the stores near you. Please, no pushing!

First Shipments: The first customers to pre-order nook are already receiving shipping confirmations and should expect delivery within the next day or two. More will go out through the week, so we expect to see many more happy nook owners in the days ahead.

Also, we expect to have more information for people with Dec. 7 ship dates later today.

Customers with an original expected ship date of Dec. 7 are getting an email tonight indicating that their nooks will arrive by Dec. 16. We appreciate your patience as we fulfill orders in the order in which they were received.

eNewspapers and eMagazines: Some of our initial ePeriodicals have started appearing on the site. What you’re seeing today is just the beginning. Many more titles are coming in the days and weeks ahead, with prominent additions expected this week.

More on the Way: Some features are still making their way through the release process. Others (like browsing complete eBooks in Barnes & Noble stores before you buy them) are coming after the new year. We’re expecting to have in-store inventory available for purchase after the new year as well; we’ll provide details as we have them.

We’re excited for customers to see a demo of nook in our stores and for the first customers to experience eReading on nook. Please remember that nooks ordered today (here or through your local Barnes & Noble store) are expected to ship Jan. 15. If your nook’s a gift, there’s still time to get the special Holiday Certificate that you can wrap as a place-holder.

Thanks, everyone. And happy eReading!

Just came from the Cary NC store, they have two demo devices.

Please have the stores place a bottle of hand sanitizer near the demos.

Yes! Please let us Dec7th shipment people know when we can expect our nook :smileyhappy:

I sure hope the Dec 7th shipments still go out as scheduled. I'm really looking forward to receiving my nook.

Pepino: Why not just buy your own? I've seen small bottles at walgreens for 99 cents.

Hmm --  I smell a Dear Valued customer email.

by Loupy1 on ‎12-07-2009 03:09 PM

Yep - I was expecting that valued customer email too.  For a nanosecond, I stupidly convinced myself that I would not get one :smileysad:

by amckell on ‎12-07-2009 03:13 PM

well, I mean if they were telling some orig 11/30'ers, what'd you expect?  Talk about a PR NIGHTMARE if word got out (which it would from all the blogging that's been going on in anticipation)..I'm in the same boat btw

by bookenthusiast81 on ‎12-07-2009 03:57 PM

I don't think its a big deal if the Dec. 7th shipment is late. I automatically assumed that if people in line before me were receiving their nooks 7-10 days later, then I would be too. But it would be wonderful surprise if that weren't the case. My eyes are getting sore from reading ebooks on my laptop as I buy books for my nook in anticipation and read them before my nook arrives! As it nears the end of the day, though I worry our update may be a little later than promised. Fingers crossed B&N!

Interesting, I just saw the product and is nice looking. Too bad B&N doesn't just tell us that the manufacture who is making the Nook was having a problem. Having been a manufacturing product line manager, even if they had too many orders would have been able to get their demo units out. Hopefully B&N knew how many stores they had.  Demand was an issue, but also the manufacture had a problem with the supply of displays not being available. Sony had the same issue with their reader.

Overall, seeing the product it is worth the wait and hopefully, mine will be here this week.

I just left the store in Greenville, NC ... got my hands on it.

I was sadly disappointed. It could be my own ignorance though with eReaders in general, but the flicker between pages is so annoying. I went to see the Sony eReader Touch and it did the same thing between pages. Does the Kindle do this as well?

The position for the page forward and backward was not designed very well either, IMHO. I don't know if the button was broke, but the customer service rep said the Nook had only been up for a couple of hours (thinking that it *might* have been up for weeks and worn out or broke), but the right hand forward button was hard to push - my thumb joint would not be a happy camper after a bit.

It was also smaller than I thought.

Just the thoughts of someone still trying to decide which route to take ...

dphazelwood, yes all e-ink screens flicker on refresh. After you have used it for a few hours or days you will barely even register it anymore.

With e-readers having mechanical buttons, some may be more difficult to push than others. The buttons on the K1 were much easier to push than the ones on the K2. I think with nook I may be more likely to use the swipe on the touchscreen vs. the mechanical page turn buttons.

I was just reading about the touchscreen on the reader ... I thought that it was touch screen and I tried it but it didn't work ... maybe I was doing something wrong. I'll go back and check. Thanks for the heads up on the flicker issue ... I didn't know that.

As the so perfectly sung by the Who on Tommy, back in 1969,

See me,

feel me,

touch me,

heal me.

I did just that, just a few moments ago at my local B&N store, just a stones throw away from my house. I got to see, feel, and touch a nook. The healing part will come when the device is home at last.

Although, I am due to receive an email any moment, I feel that I, will get pushed back again, I feel better knowing I saw two functioning units, was able to navigate easily and experienced no flickering or glitches. Was able to tell the manager of the store how to change the size of the type and the type style. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to maneuver.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting my nook.  I'm one of the Dec. 7 delivery date people.  Since I hadn't seen any news, I was expecting it to ship out today.  Hopefully it won't be too horrible of a delay.  Anyhow, I might stop by B&N on my way home from work and actually play around with the demo copy.

by kcwags on ‎12-07-2009 04:59 PM

I'm a bit confused by the statement "the first customers to pre-order nook are already receiving shipping confirmations"  I have searched blogs and other web sites high and low, and have only heard of ONE person who has gotten a shipping confirmation.  This seems a bit strange.  Also, mix in the fact that I was one of the very first people to order (prior to the 3pm on the day of release!) and haven't gotten a confirmation yet, things don't add up.  I am still patiently waiting my shipping confirmation, but just a little wary of getting my hopes up too much at this point.

How do you get a December 7th Ship Date?

Why is mine still stuck on November 30th?  I ordered on October 20 at 4pm.

People who ordered after me have posted shipping confirmations already.
