As we near the official kick-off of the holiday shopping season, we wanted to provide an update on nook, one of this year’s most popular holiday gifts. nook continues to be the fastest-selling product at Barnes & Noble, and pre-orders have continued to exceed our expectations.
While we increased production based on the high consumer interest, we’ve sold out of our initial nook allotment available for delivery before the holidays.
All customers ordering a nook beginning today, November 20 should expect their devices to ship beginning the week of January 4, 2010.
Update: Customers ordering nook beginning today, November 30, should expect their devices to ship on or around Jan. 11, 2010.
To assist those customers who are purchasing nooks as holiday gifts, we have created a special holiday certificate, noting an expected January ship date. Beginning today, any customer pre-ordering nook as a gift will have the option to receive a special certificate at no cost -- either in-store or via mail, for those pre-ordering online.
We continue to ramp up nook supply to meet the demand in the New Year. We’re committed to providing timely updates to our customers on expected nook availability and will do so through in-store, online and our direct-to-customer communications throughout the holiday season.

Does this mean that B&N stores won't have the nook on November 30, so we can check it out in person? I wanted to try the device before ordering.

I thought that we would be able to purchase this device in the store on November 30th. I called the store and now they won't have any for purchase and only one to demo. No warnings before this date change so now no Nook before the holiday's. Well I guess there is always one item every Christmas that is all hyped up and never available.... Sony is very good at that... Wish BN wasn't... You would think that BN members would have got a warning and about the availability before hand.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, BN has been taking pre-orders for nearly a month. If you received one and didn't like it, you could return it. Shipping was free, so you wouldn't beven be out-of-pocket for that. I'm sorry, but I don't have a great deal of sympathy--I know, I'm an unsympathetic jerk. Just ask my kids.

Just talking with the nurses here and this was brought to my attention! They were looking to order and discovered the Jan 4 delivery date! I ordered about a month ago so hopefully they roll it out.

I know the preorders were there, I was going into the store that's all. I am not that interested in online shopping. I am more disappointed that I didn't preorder it online and yes I was told by a few to preorder it. Wanted it for under the tree, I guess will have to settle for the card...

Well, that works out. Since it won't be under the tree now I can afford to wait that 6 to 8 months and get that better eReader everyone claims in just around the corner.

What I don't like is the fact that I pre-ordered mine and was under the impression that it would ship on the 30th. However, when I checked my order status, it states that it will not ship until Dec. 11th. This really disappoints me.

I preordered a nook on 11-15 and this AM found out our credit card had been compromised,- sopme one had bought a ticket on aeroflot in Russia with my cc! Well the number has been canceled- I called B and N to see if I could change the credit card that my nook is be held with and cutomer service said "No- when the nook was about to be shipped they would run my CC again and if it declines they would contact me to arrange alternative payment." I knew the card is going to decline and concerned it would hold up my shipment I canceled my order and reordered with my new card- Needless to say,now I wont get my Nook till Jan
- I have a few more real books I have to get through anyways before the new year but I am pissed- at the person who stole my number , and at B&N's customer service ( or lack there of)

Can't believe how popular this product has become. I ended up buying all my employees (25 of them) the Kindle from Amazon just because I wanted my employees to have it on the holiday. I contacted both B&N and Amazon to get price quotes for a large order and never even heard back from B&N.
Amazon was extremely responsive.
Congrats to B&N for coming out with what looks like a great product. Unfortunately I think their market department and customer service department didn't do them any favors. I own a research/marketing firm thus the reason we buy 10,000 books a year, and we'd never recommend announcing a product like this before it's available. This gives Amazon and Sony a heads up on how to improve their product and put together an update for the holiday season. I was told by Amazon that the update is coming, which is why we bought all the units from them.
Hopefully this works out for everyone.

I hope the reviews are good duringn your Christmas break.
In the meantime, I'll check out my friend's kindles and look at the Sony ereader.
I don't order vaporware or something a company isn't invested in.
When it's actually being manufactured I'll consider it, if I haven't already purchased something else.

Is there a plan to help customers help migrate from Kindle to Nook? All the Kindle books we've bought are making our relationship with Amazon sticky and it would make the economics for us worthwhile if you replicated the Kindle library on the Nook. I'm pretty sure that the customer life time value will be positive if you consider our years of purchases to come.

Nook stands! For the love of god, people, you need Nook stands!
That way, those of us who want to use our Nooks as deskside reference materials can have the material we need right in eye sight rather than craning our necks to see it.
Isn't that a great idea? Seems to me that it's worth a free Nook.....

I just went through the Product Comparison for the nook vs. Kindle.
There are many features which the nook has that Kindle doesn't, like the touch/color screen, but it doesn't have the Text-to-Speech feature.
I have not used any ebook, but thought that Text-to-Speech seemed like a nice Kindle feature; to switch to audio or voice read. I drive 2 hours each day to work and like that time for Books on Tape.
Just wondering if anyone with a Kindle uses that feature (if it works well) and would you miss it with the nook?
