1.1.1 software update

[ Edited ]

As noted elsewhere on this board, we recently released an over the air software update (version 1.1.1) for nook. Details of this update can be found on the nook Support page.

For most users, this software update will happen automatically when your nook syncs with bn.com. During the Christmas holiday weekend, nook software updates can be made over a Wi-Fi connection or by manually installing the update, as described on the nook Support page.

Software updates over the 3G connection are expected to resume on a rolling basis after the holiday weekend.

Please note that the most recently shipped nooks have version 1.0.1 pre-installed. Those nooks have most of the improvements that 1.1.1 offers.

Also, please note that some nooks have already been updated to 1.1.0. These nooks cannot be updated to 1.1.1 at this time. If you have 1.1.0 and your nook does not recogize your Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) books, please take the following steps:

  1. Connect your nook to your PC.
  2. Open the nook drive.
  3. Copy/Move the “Digital Editions” folder into the “my documents” folder in the nook drive.
  4. Eject/Unmount/safely remove your nook drive.
  5. Check for new content on device in “My Documents” inside my library.

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Kevin-

Can you verify that everyone should be able to get the 1.1.1 or are some units only able to upgrade to 1.1.0? If that's the case, how does one go from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1? Those trying to sideload the update are getting an invalid update error message.

Thanks!

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Yes, PLEASE let us 1.1.0 people know what the deal is.  I feel like I must be missing out on something... and there are comments out on the web about how you (B&N) will not answer this VERY simple question:

ARE 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 the same? Or NOT?

Thank you.

My understanding is they're not the same, but they're very close. 1.1.1 corrected the problem people were having with Adobe Digital Editions. ... If that doesn't affect you, you should be able to sit tight with 1.1.0 until the next update.

I hope this helps.

If that's so then I don't personally need it, but I've seen posts from several people who were concerned with ADE that have been unable to install 1.1.1.    How is it that this update is being selectively applied?

Re: 1.1.1 software update

OK. Thanks, Kevin.

Indeed, I was a person using ADE and NOT having the problem the morning of the update. ADE works great for me. So, I will sit tight.  Attempting to sideload the manually-downloaded .dat for 1.1.1 gave me the "Invalid Update" in the lower right corner, and nook had deleted the offending file.

I am one of the people having trouble with ADE and I have 1.1.0. Any help on how to get the upgrade to 1.1.1?

I have version 1.1.0.  Does that mean I am a version behind?

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Hi B&N
First civility: Merry Christmas!
I received my Nook yesterday and I have already loaded several books and read one already. I like the display and the navigability of the Nook and I like using it. However, I have 2 issues. 1. I have registered my Nook and received a notice for software upgrade to V1.1. However, I have tried several times to download the upgrade using my own home Wi-Fi hotspot. The Nook actually recognizes it and calls it by name. If I can download books why can't I download the software upgrade? Number 2: How does one go about having the microSDcard installed for extra memory?  Help!!??
Thanks, Tim Fredrickson

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Hi Tim,

I can at least help with the SD card installation. Get the PDF user guide (you can download it from the help and support page) and go to page 115. It describes in detail how to take off the back cover of the nook and put in the SD card, and also tells what kind of card you should buy.

Good luck!

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Kimbe yes it does mean you are a version behind, based on what Kevin wrote, BUT from what he wrote, my sense is that if you are not experiencing any issues with Adobe Digital Editions books, then you don't really have to worry about getting this newest update anytime soon.  It was issued only to address that one issue.

I also have not gotten this most recent update but assume it will show up sometime over the weekend or next week.  Again, Kevin's post indicates that via Wifi it will show up Christmas weekend--that would be this tomorrow or Sunday.  And via 3g would mean even after that.  If you're not having issues with ADE downloads then there really is no harm in having to wait.  The bigger software update was the 1.1.0 and if you've gotten that, you are probably in pretty good shape, no?

Re: 1.1.1 software update

Hi Kevin. I am new to my nook.  Have the new update.  My nook works well with a few hiccups, but none that bothers me as much as this.  When I turn my nook off after reading an ebook, then turn it back on, it rarely goes back to the last page I have read.  Even if I bookmark a page, turn my nook off, then on, there is no record of my bookmark.  If I hit "go to furthest page read" on the LCD display, that does not work either.  All these functions work properly after sleep mode, but not after shutdown?  I would presume the nook should be able to go to my last page read after shutting down and booting up.  Am I doing something wrong?   Thanks.

I've seen several others mention that.  It's likely something they'll address in an upcoming patch.  It's a bummer, but shouldn't affect your usage that much.  There really is no reason to shut down your Nook.  Just put it to sleep.

Re: 1.1.1 software update

If you ARE doing something wrong, I'm doing the same wrong thing.

Somehow, I doubt it's us. B&N rushed out 1.1.1 shortly after 1.1.0 and their software Quality Assurance left a lot to be desired.

To their credit, they have not rushed out a 1.1.2, but seem to be taking the necessary time to do it right.

Which is better, get the next update quickly or have it work?

Re: 1.1.1 software update

TimJoFred,

Merry Christmas to you as well!

The SD card is the easier answer.  You have to pry the back off the nook (most easily done by prying apart initially on the sides where you see the indentations).  You'll see a small section with a metal slot you have to lift to insert the SD.  Insert, reverse the other steps, and you're done.

Re the upgrade, what happens when you try it?   How are you trying it, are you checking for new B&N content?  There's another way that involves completely powering down the nook (holding the power button down for several seconds until the screen goes completely blank), then clicking the power button to bring it back up, and holding down one of the page buttons on each side of the nook while it powers up, until you see that it is downloading the upgrade.  You might try one or the other of these if you haven't.

A wild guess is that you might have received a partial download of the update file, and that it is confused.  If so, you could try connecting your nook via USB to your computer, then check to see if there is a file in the root directory that looks like it might be an update file.  By default, there are no files in the root, only other folders, so if you find a file there its probably the update file.

If you find a file there, delete it.  You can then try again either by one of the other two approaches, OR you can download the update from B&N to your computer, sideload it to the root of the nook, and upon properly ejecting the nook from the computer, it should wake up, see the update, and install it.

I would recommend being sure to use the Safely Remove Hardware icon to eject the nook when sideloading.  I've done it both ways, but I've occasionally (maybe twice) had problems when just pulling the plug.

Re: 1.1.1 software update

JM1955, I'm guessing you'll enjoy your nook immensely as you continue to get used to it, and as B&N continue to make improvements.

I agree with other posters who are suggesting not powering it down except as needed.  It is not like a laptop.  The screen doesn't consume energy once it has been painted with a page.  A small electric charge is applied to paint it, and then the black / white color of each small little spot the occupy the page will then retain that color for quite some time (days) without changing, with no power applied.  There is no risk of screen burn in.  It's not a backlit LCD.

Now, that said, eventually you'll need to turn it off for one reason or another, either to see if that resolves some other problem, or because you ran completely out of battery, or whatever.   (By the way, you will get many more days of battery life if you keep airplane mode turned on, and only go online when you need to.)

Once you do turn off your nook, you obviously don't want to lose your location.  As long as you have exited the book (by navigating to your library, or to the daily, or wherever) it should remember your location even if you power it completely off.

However, it currently seems to be book dependent.  I have books where this works, and others where it doesn't.  The strange thing is, where it doesn't go to my last read point, it does return to a previous spot that I had read, just not the most current.  Still trying to figure that out, but my sense is that these are locations that were last saved in 1.0, and 1.1 is no longer saving for these particular books, even though it works fine for others.

For now, if you can avoid powering down unless you really need to, you will minimize this issue.  There is just no reason to do so.  You aren't being any less "green" by leaving it in sleep mode.  Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of the varying behavior and come out with an update soon to resolve it.

Sorry, icebike. It turns our 1.1.0 cannot be updated to 1.1.1 at this time.
