Based on everything I have read from Adobe about ePub DRM it should work. You should be able to use the Adobe Digital Editions software to load the Sony ePub books into the Kindle as long as you are using the same Adobe ID that the Sony book was downloaded for. I have Sony books but I do not have a Nook to try it on. Thanks to anyone who gives it a shot.

I don't have any Sony books, but I've loaded a bunch of Fictionwise ePub books and they work just fine. They show up in My Documents instead of My Library, which is irritating, but at least I'm able to read my whole library.

I haven't done it but I read on another board that people were able to side-load a Sony epub book.

I've personally transfered my entire library of Sony titles to my nook (and officially retired all of my Sony ebook readers!)
Steps required:
1. Upgrade to 3.1 of the Sony software so you have epub support.
2. Login and re-download all your titles.
3. Install Adobe Digital Editions on your system.
4. Plug in your nook and allow Adobe Digital Editions to activate it.
5. Import all the titles from the My Books folder used by the Sony software into Adobe Digital Editions.
6. Once imported the titles can be dragged and dropped inside the Adone Digital Editions software onto your nook.
Eject the nook and enjoy reading your Sony purchased titles.

Does this also work with libary books. It seem that Sony is the only application that allows me to read library borrowed ebooks.
If the Nook can accept library books, I will be in the store tomorrow to get one. If not, I may have to settle for the Sony E-reader. I want to have the option of borrowing from the library or purchasing.
Thanks

How do you read library book on the nook? I have downloaded one and tried to read it on the reader on my computer as I don't have the nook in hand yet. When I tried to open it it wanted my name and card number to unlock it and it didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks it worked like a charm! Im so glad that I can still use my books from the library. That is one thing that I have to give it to sony for. Their reader library was very easy to transfer library books from the computer to the reader!

That is exactly what I did. When I try to open the book using the ereader it asks for the unlock information. I enter it and it doens't work. Why would I have to unlock it if it is from the library and not BN?

Thanks for the instructions! I've got about 35 books from Sony. Most of them have been switched to the epub format and now reside on my nook.
I'll be glad when the rest have been switched: I'll be able to sell my PRS-500. Don't get me wrong: I have nothing against it. I just don't need 2 e-book readers.

As I read thru everyone's replies and questions, it would appear what I want to do is a bit backwards. I got the Sony eReader for Christmas, downloaded books from B&N and discovered afterwards that they won't load to the reader. What's really odd tho is that the two free books from B&N loaded, but not the rest. Any ideas how I can get the rest from my computer onto my Sony?

You can't at this time. It's not a supported option.

Flower...you can download a free program called calibre which will allow you to download your B & N books to it. You select the Sony e-reader as your device and calibre will automatically change the format for your Sony. Then, just hook your Sony e-reader into your computer, select the book, click send to device, and then you should be able to enjoy your B & N books on your Sony.
Here is the website. It has a great demo that will get you familiar with the program. It is a wonderful ebook library management program.

Good luck!

Flowerphotog, the only way to use B&N books on the Sony ereader is to crack the drm... There are python scripts for this on the internet, but it is not entirely legal.
Calibre is a great program but it cannot convert drm'ed epubs.

Seems kind of weird for a company that sells books to avoid selling to a large population of potential buyers. The Sony ebook readers are everywhere in the shops. A lot of them were sold over Christmas, and I suspect many more will be sold in the next year. And let's face it, if all you want is a 'smallish' basic reader, the PRS-300 gets you started very inexpensively.
There is no shortage of other vendors for ebooks that DO support Sony readers (Just do an internet search on 'ebooks'). At least B&N are selling ebooks, Borders/Waldenbooks sell the Sony, but don't seem to sell ebooks. How stupid is that? Like I said, there are plenty of options for Sony users.
The proprietary business model for ebook reading is not sustainable for the long term. Eventually, B&N and Amazon will have to change or get out of the business. It may not be this week or even this year, but eventually, economic pressure will force their hand.

To Smedley,
Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. I followed your directions and finished in minutes! My only problem is that I cannot see my books that were side-loaded. When my nook is plugged into my laptop via USB, the Adobe Digital Edition folder (on the nook drive) is displayed and I can access my book. Once I disconnect, I cannot find my book in "my documents" or any other location on my Nook. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

When I open a library book on the nook it shows the title up at the top and then says Page 0 without being able to do anything else. What is causing this?

On the nook, go into "Settings" (from the five-color home menu), then press the "next page" button, and tell us what firmware version you have. If it's 1.1.0, there's a known bug with it not finding Adobe Digital Editions content loaded on the nook. As a temporary workaround, after dragging the stuff onto the nook inside ADE, you can close ADE and manually move the content from the "Digital Editions" folder on the nook to the "My Documents" folder.
