With regards to the bookmarks...well, I thought of bookmarks as simply a way to "jump" to the page you're seeking. I didn't expect to see any indication that a page is "bookmarked", but I can see how that'd be useful. But yeah, i've had the same experience with highlights; they are not very useful. What I've found is that when you have highlights "off", there's a small mark on the left side of the page (less than 1/8" wide...kind of a rectangle with a triangle pointing toward the text) But if I turn "Show Highlights" on, then I can see the text that's been highlighted. Does this not appear for you?

OK, this one is easier. 
No, you don't have to download the ereader for your computer in order to receive updates for the nook...or for "The Daily", if that's what you're talking about. For system updates, you do have to either have WiFi access (either by going to a B&N store, or finding a Wi-Fi hotspot; see Connectivity on the FAQ page (bn.com) if you're confused) or you can download updates to your computer and then "sideload" them to your nook using the included cord. In neither case are you required to download the PC eReader software.
