My two remaining questions are above. Does the Nook allow for folders? And does it have PDF reflow or does it only read device-ready PDFs. Thanks.

I am aslo interested in the pdf issues.

It does seem strange, doesn't it? They keep making the device capacity larger and people keep begging for folders. Tech people have told me that it is not difficult to do--so why aren't they doing it???

That's a really good question. I hope B&N address it soon.

I am checking on your PDF reflow question and will respond ASAP.

Kristine, do you also have any information on password-protected PDFs? I have a number of PDFs that require a password to access them, and I would love to be able to read them on the nook.
Thanks!

Jim, I'll check on that as well. I am currently replying to all the questions I can, but I may not be able to get those that require further investigation (like yours) until tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Not a problem Kristine. We've got a month before the nook is out.
Thanks for taking the time to look into these!

Jim, I have a few answers, and a follow-up question.
I did find out that nook does not support password-protected PDFs; sorry about that. But the good news is, nook does support PDF reflow.
However, not sure what you mean when you ask if nook will support device-ready PDFs. Can you please clarify?

Thanks, Kristine. I'm bummed to hear about not supporting password-protected PDFs (if that could be added in a future update, though, that'd be wonderful). Good to hear about reflow, though, as I know there's a number of people looking for that.
I didn't ask about device-ready PDFs (that was the original poster), but I think it just means PDFs that are formatted for optimum viewing on the nook's screen dimensions. If that's what the poster was asking, then I think the answer is obvious: yes, with the caveats you described about support for password protection, etc.
Thanks for the reply!

Since reflow is not always the ideal solution, what do you all think about using the touchscreen to quickly navigate/zoom-in to a PDF page prior to rendering on the much slower eink display? This is just an idea that came to mind, so perhaps it is utter garbage. However, if it or something else has merit, perhaps the nook dev team could consider it for future software versions.

Since the nook will reflow I plan on taking an sd card with a pdf on it and testing it at a BN store. If it works (I sure hope it does) then I will be buying one!

That's a great idea. I wish I had thought of it.
One point for the nook in the great nook vs. Kindle war (assuming that the B&N store doesn't mind my sticking in a strange object into the thing).
I'm not worried about reflow, but about legibiity for the types of files I deal with:

http://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/agenda/pdf/BCC_Sta
I can hold off making any sort of decision until I go by the local B&N.
What date will it be there?

fcoulter32724 - Had a peek at your pdfs. Not sure those charts are going to come out correctly on a 6 inch screen. You may want to consider the Plastic Logic Que (available in 2010 from BN) or the Kindle DX. Regardless take a sample to BN when they have the demo and try it out.
All stores are supposed to have a demo unit by November 30th.

As a reminder, the nook will only accept MicroSD cards, so a standard SD card would not fit.

I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to PDF stuff other than I know that my knitting patterns are mainly available in PDF format. Does anyone know whether it would be worth it for me to get my hopes up about being able to download PDF knitting patterns to my Nook so that I wouldn't have to carry around the printed ones?? I wasn't sure how the viewing would work on the smaller screen. Will the PDF pull up as more of a picture that has super small font because the whole page is on the screen at once or will it make the font a readable size with scroll bars?
Thanks for any help on this. As silly as it seems, this is kind of the main selling point for me because of the amount of knitting I do. ^_^

And will it allow zooming in to see the details of an illustration or drawing?

I would like to know if color pdfs are supported or if they can only be viewed in grayscale. Thanks!

I don't imagine that color PDFs will show up in color on a greyscale screen (because the nook isn't magic). Color shows up in one of the lovely 16 shades of grey.
