Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

[ Edited ]

Alright so if you're like me you've been persistent for the past several hours or days in tapping the button that says "check for new BN content"... blah blah blah, like a few people have been suggesting. But sorry folks, if that works for some people then I'm not one of them because it aint working for me.

Now one thing that has work so far, is to download the book via the computer version of BN E-reader and manually transfer it to the folder called my documents on your Nook. It was a fluke mind you that the computer was actually able to download them and it took a few tries of forcing it, but it does seem to be doing better than the Nook itself.

So here's what I did:

1. Download and install BN E-reader on your computer.

2. Run the program, login as yourself and load your library. Luckily BN did this right, because they gave us access to already purchased books across platforms (ie. I have access on my PC and my Blackberry)

3. Try to download the book(s) to your computer. If and when you're successful try and read the book from your computer. If you can, then it's a step in the right direction.

4. Once you've verified you're able to read the book on the PC , find the .epub files by browsing to My Documents> My BN Ebooks. If you cant find the folder just run a search on your computer for .epub and it's sure to find it/them.

5. Plug in your Nook and open the folder called "my documents".

6. Copy and Paste the epub files into that folder.

7. Safely Remove your Nook and enjoy.

To read the book just go to your library and then View My Documents.

This is only a temporary fix until they can resolve the problems or traffic reduces.

If you have any questions just let me know. Hope this helps.

PS. Sorry for you Mac users but like the reply below says, it won't work for you guys.

Yep Joey, we Mac users have been left in the dust.  Good thing my DH has a PC.  I've loaded the e-Reader on there and may resort to this fix if I plow through the 3 other books I already have on my nook to read before downloading today's purchase of "Look Me in the Eye".

This works for Macs too!!

See my post from a different thread...http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/eBooks-Help-Board/Nook-isn-t-downloading-puchases/m-p/435781

It's not as well put together with step by step instructions as Fading_Echo, but it's the gist.

Glad it worked for you. Doesn't work for me though. I can't download to either my nook or laptop. And I'm having a problem with a gift certificate. Not too happy so far...

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

It took me several tries to download via the PC but it finally worked.  When it works, it happens in an instant.  All I can say is keep trying.

Thanks for the step by step, my sister is very happy to have a book to read.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

None of my ebooks have downloaded properly. Right now B&N is getting a major fail. I thought they had redeemed themselves by getting this to me in the nick of time for Christmas.

I may just send the thing back and get the Kindle.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Is anyone else just having trouble downloading the books to the desktop of their PC?  I'm trying to get my books by using "the fix" but it won't even download to the PC?

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Everyone has trouble downloading onto their desktop. Be persistent...eventually it works for most people. I clicked download...let it sit and 'think' about it for nearly five minutes without touching my computer, and it suddenly started downloading out of nowhere. If your browser stops 'thinking' and it hasn't downloaded yet, just click the download button again and try it again. It took me three tries (fifteen minutes of staring at my computer doing nothing!) before it finally worked.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

For downloading to the PC, if it doesn't download right away, closing and opening the e-reader back up some times helps. But definitely be persistent and keep trying.

On a brighter note, I just took my Nook out with me on my way to dinner and it looked like we might be getting closer to a fix with the download directly to the Nook. Before when I tried it, I didn't get any indication that it was doing anything, but as of recently the little download arrow was blinking indicating that it might be trying harder.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Thanks for the encouragement.  I've been going at this for 90 minutes and still no luck.  I've already posted an anti-fan remark on Facebook and e-mailed the NY Times tech writer to write about what a colossal failure this has been for all the new Nook owners on Christmas day.  I'm going to have to go to bed here soon just to calm down.  I might read a paper book just to get drowsy.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Just another quick update, I've been trying the download again between breaks from reading the books I've managed to get on my Nook but still no luck. It just keeps going saying "We're sorry..." Blah... or nothing happens.

Even with the problems we're facing though, I still wouldn't trade this in for a Kindle. I know a lot of people out there are having second thoughts about getting, receiving, or asking for a Nook this Christmas looking back in hind sight, but lets face it, if computer nerds like Microsoft and Google can have servers kick the bucket due to sheer traffic, then maybe we could cut BN a little slack.

Also, if anyone is looking for any kind of (whats the word I'm looking for?) repayment or retribution for they're suffering, I would make sure you send at least one E-mail or phone call to BN and save a copy of it. That way you've got a record of having called and technical proof of having a problem.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Here's another possible workaround.  Many local libraries offer e-books.  You can download them from your library's site, and if they're in epub format you should be able to transfer them to "my documents" and read them.  As far as I'm concerned, the device isn't broken, just the store that sells the e-books...

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

Thats a really good point and thanks for bringing that up. If you're a college student the best place to start would probably be your campus library which most these days are supporting .epub and even audio books. I haven't been to a public library in ages, not even sure if my library card is still active, but thats probably a pretty good bet to. As for myself, personally I prefer to buy all my books and would like to have all the epubs listed in one place under my B&N Digital library list.

Which leads me to my next comment. In the nick of time it looks like download issues have been resolved, for me anyway. I finished reading The Golden Compass last night and went to bed hoping for a better day of reading and low and behold, I was able to buy and download the next book in the series without problem.

Hope everyone is having as much luck as I am this morning.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

*Another update:
If you're having an issue where the entire book is not downloaded (ie. Missing pages, sentences, whole chapters, whole half or more books), this solution, I just found out will not help that. I'm back to reading on my computer just to finish the books I've started. Which is NOT COOL BN, NOT COOL AT ALL!
I will be sure to update this thread or create a new one if and when I find a solution to the new issues. Ignore my signature, because I am sure as heck not happily reading.

Re: Improvised Fix for not being able to download books!

THANX!! this defin worked. I have spent 2 hours waiting for BN tech support...and I'm still waiting. Customer Service refunded the total price I paid for the ebook and told me to re-purchase. Apparently the nook remembers all the books you purchase or delete, so this was not an option. Any ideas on how I can re-purchase the book?
