Lend eBooks to Friends - May not be what you think!

I bought the Nook for my wife planning on getting one for myself. Several other friends also bought one with the expectation it would be cheaper in the long run as we can lend eBooks to each other after finishing (several other readers suggested that Amazon books were on average cheaper). After extensively speaking with the salesperson who convinced us the LendMe feature alone was the reason to go with the Nook we bought the nook and suggested several friends to also make the purchase. No one realized the problem until I stumbled on page 112 of the users manual which has their lending rules. It states "Not all eBooks can be lent (though many can)" and "You can only lend an eBook one time". Please refer to the chapter for the full details and other limitations. This defeats the reason I purchased the nook as you can pass around a real book all you want so this "RULE" makes no sense.

We have to get the word out to pressure B&N to make a change. IF consumers refuse to purchase the nook I am confident B&N can change this "RULE".

But you over look the fact that you can borrow public library books using the nook and kindle can't.

Exactly Izzy......I also dont understand how people think authors can eat if we dont actually BUY their books.

Also, in my library ight now, at least 90% of the books I have in their are lendable.

Izzy, thank you for your response which is a pro to buying the nook. However, all I am trying to state is the reason why I chose the nook. Unfortunately they are misleading the public but not informing the salespeople properly and are advertising something (LendMe) to sell a product but are not really delivering.

I don't think asking B&N to deliver what they are advertising is unreasonable and does not require a questionable response which lead me to xtina72. Yes I know I can borrow a book at the library but I do like to support the authors and BUY their books too. I would expect to be able to lend the book to my wife AND maybe a friend. By comparison a library can lend the same book to thousands, and the authors can still eat.

Mike I understand that was your major issue with B&N and the nook. Like everything else in the world always read the fine print and research. On the bright side if you wanted to "lend" books to your wife, you can just register both nooks on the same B&N account this way you both can read the same book at the same time and even take about it while reading it "together." :smileyvery-happy:

Can't edit post anymore? Forgot to add if you take out a public library book you can also transfer it your wife's nook.

Thank you lizzyizzy, I didn't know I can register them both on the same account so that we wouldn't have to swap our nooks. And yes I do like to research the heck out of my purchases but I trusted the salesperson and the impulse buy got the better of me!

I still hope they can make the changes or pressure the publishers if that's the problem.

Mike I don't think B&N intended on not being able to make Lend feature more widely available. It all has to do with the publisher but am glad you see the bright sides of your purchase. Am happy with my purchase but I have noticed since the updated firmware that the page turning for me is slower. On the bright side bookmarks stay after the upgrade. I try to see the bright side of things, even though there are some things the nook needs improving- waiting patiently.

Re: Lend eBooks to Friends - May not be what you think!

I purchased an ebook, thus I think it is mine to lend to whom I wish as often as I wish.

That is the whole point in purchasing a book or any item!   I'm not selling it, I am lending it.

It is my property if I buy it so if I want to lend it 10 times I should be able to.

The ebooks are not that much less than paper..

How do you use the library feature with the nook.  I did not know about this and this would be a great feature to learn about

The library feature is awesome.  I went on my library's website and it basically walked me through downloading the books.  It is awesome. You need to download adobe digital editions to your computer and that program basically lets you put the books onto your nook.  I am not sure if all library's have lending options, but it is definitely worth it to check it out.
