Nook in Canada

Hello,

I just heard about the nook from a friend and have a couple of questions:

1) On your website it says that downloads will be available in Canada in December. Will this be via ATT? If so, do I have to have an account with them? Or will this be free to Canadians?

2) Will I be able to download from the device or do In have to download to my pc and transfer it to the nook?

3) How much will the ebooks be for Canadians to download?

4) Will we be able to receive newspaper and magazine subscriptions as well?

5) Can I download music from itunes to the nook?

6) Can I download ebooks from sources other than B and N, i.e the library, other internet site etc.

Thank you for your time, I look forward to your responce.

Regards,

Jennifer

Re: Nook in Canada

Thanks for your questions jsargeant7.

nook connects using 3G wireless technology and Wi-Fi connectivity.  You don't need an account with AT&T.  The wireless connection is free.

You can download eBooks from the Barnes & Noble eBookstore.  You can purchase books wireless on nook or through your PC. You will connect to the same eBookstore as anyone else would, so all prices are the same for Canada.

We will have several eNewspaper and eMagazine subrscriptions available for purchase.

nook is unable to download music from itunes, however you can upload MP3s onto nook through a USB connection or  microSD and microSDHC memory cards.

At this time nook will only download eBooks from the Barnes & Noble eBookstore.

Yes, AT&T does provide service in Canada.  For exact coverage, you should refer to their website.

Thank you for your responce.

Please clarify: Will I be able to download ebooks from other sources i.e library, other book sellers to my computer and transfer to the nook?

Thank you,

Jennifer

Re: Nook in Canada

nook supports all eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers sold at Barnes & Noble.com. You can also load many other files, including MP3s and PDFs, as well as ePub and PDB files.

You will not be able to load eBooks from other book sellers onto nook.

Never mind as I just found the blog post and help page and it confirms I'll have to get the Nook into Canada via an indirect route then I can buy content from Canada.

Re: Nook in Canada

I'm also in Canada. When can I buy and have a nook shipped to a Canadian address.

Or, should I have it shipped to a friend in the US who could bring it to Canada when they visit at Christmas?

Also, does the nook come with a USB cable or must that be purchased separately?

Re: Nook in Canada

Thanks for your inquiry J-Ruby.  At this time we don't know when or if we'll be selling nook in Canada.  However, if you have a friend who brings it to you from the U.S., you will be able to access the Barnes & Noble eBookstore around December 1st.

nook comes with the following accessories:

  • nook
  • Micro-USB 2.0 cable
  • Quick Start Guide
  • AC adapter
  • Rechargeable battery (installed)

Re: Nook in Canada

Thanks Josh,

One last question, can you recharge the nook internationally from a 220v source? ie will the AC Adaptor accept 220v. (assuming of course that you use the right plug adaptor, but without a voltage converter)

Thanks for the inquiry J-Ruby.  This shouldn't be a problem as long as you have the right plug adapter.

Re: Nook in Canada

The blog is located here;

http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Unbound-The-eReading-Blog/bg-p/Unbound

If you scroll down a bit you'll see the entry re.Canadian ebook purchases. No Nook sold in Canada but if you can get it here, you won't have any trouble ordering ebooks directly.

Re: Nook in Canada

Actually, there is a problem ordering 'some' B&N ebooks from Canada.

For example, in the Science Fiction eBooks, only about 1 in 5 books can be ordered by a Canadian.  They have the statement:

These items ship to U.S. and Canadian addresses only.

The others have the statement:

These items ship to U.S. addresses only.

So, if you check the fine print on each book you will see what titles can be ordered with a Canadian billing address and what titles cannot, and avoid my long and frustrating experience.

Re: Nook in Canada

I'm really interested in getting a nook (via an American relative), but looking at some of the titles I'd be interested in buying, they are all available only in the U.S. That's very nice and all that we can download titles in Canada now, but what percentage of the e-bookstore is actually available here? Are there any plans to improve this? Or should I not bother getting a nook?
