I have been looking around this forum trying to figure out about downloading books from the NYC public Library. It seems easy enough - but requires using Overdrive.
The problem I am anticipating is that everyone keeps mentioning downloading through Overdrive and then transferring with Adove digital editions. Unfortunately, I don't hink the Adobe program works with Mac yet.
Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something. If anyone has a link that shows the whole process, step by step, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have not used Overdrive. My library does not have it. But I do have a Mac and Adobe Digital editions does work on the Mac and once you authorize the nook on for it. you can use that to side load the books from overdrive.

I have a mac and use the Adobe Digital Editions software without a problem. I'm actually on my second book downloaded from the NYPL.
Steps:
1. Download the ADE software from here: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/
2. Drag it to your applications folder
3. Open it. register yourself.
4. plug in your nook and wait for ADE to recognize the device (sometimes I have to restart ADE to get this to happen).
5. authorize your nook
6. go to the nypl ebooks site (ebooks.nypl.org)
7. find the book you want (most popular stuff is wait listed, so you'll have to put an ehold on it)
8. once you've been notified that your book is available, sign in and follow the steps to download it.
9. click on the icon that has downloaded (mine goes to the download folder, but your's may go elsewhere). This will launch ADE, which will "load" the book.
10. with your nook plugged in, drag the book from your main screen to the nook icon on the left.
11. eject your nook
12. go to the my documents folder, select the book, and begin reading.

Actually you download your book using Adobe Digital Editions. (Hope you authorized Adobe on your computer, cause you need it.) When you finish checking out your eBook(s) click on download select "Open with Adobe Digital Editions" it will now associate .acsm file with Adobe. Then plug in your nook and authorize it. Drag and drop after that. OverDrive is actually used for audiobooks.

Sorry for the mix up folks. I just went to the site where I originally looked for ADE and realized that I was on a tech page for people having issues - the issue being "ADE won't install on a Mac."
Thanks so much for all the help.
A little horrified to see that ADE looks a bit like Sony Library software - my biggest nightmare while I had a PRS300. I'm sure Adobe has a better grasp of what's needed.
Quick follow up question: will ADE convert files to a format that the Nook likes better? I know that Calibre does this for you if you want - and many people have found benefits to converting files to epub.
Really appreciate this forum - and how quickly you all helped out.

I don't think so, but then again I use ADE strictly for uploading library books, since that's what's required. I use Calibre for everything else. Besides, most NYPL books are epub books to begin with.

THANK YOU VERY- SIMPLE
I wish all posters were as detailed and descriptive as you. I feel like a moron, becuase I was dragging the books manually into the 'my documents' folder. I just needed someone to spell it out for me. ![]()
