Update Notes

Just now got the update - initial perceptions:

1) Dracula - - as some were noting, this book could take up to...um...INFINITY...to get done formatting.  It took just under two minutes post update - FAR from great, but I guess it's tolerable - they get no points over the Kindle or Sony, but I can live with it...is this two minute time NORMAL.

2) Dracula - - fonts...I can now change to Medium font without incurring the infinite formatting times.

3) Bookmarks -- in at least one book I bought from BN, attempting to create a bookmark crashed me back to the flower page...now I can create a bookmark (just wish I could NAME them)

4) Page turning - - I can't believe this is just perception - it seems like the use of the touch pad to turn pages is MUCH better, and turning pages in either way seems faster.

Assuming I get no crashes in the next few hours, I might be willing to keep this thing.

Re: Update Notes

I guess the posting of release notes by B&N to tell us what all the new release entails is a little too much to ask for.

Re: Update Notes

I posted this in another thread but I will repeat it here:

My nook is much faster after the update. A little faster in its page turns, but it's mostly in the LCD responsiveness where I see improvements.

HOWEVER, I have two big complaints:

1) How in the bloody h*ll is "My Documents" ordered now? It used to be by author, but now there is no discernable pattern to it. What the heck?

2) My nook is still unable to distinguish between my two volumes of F. Scott Fitzgerald short stories. Digital Support implied that this would be fixed by the update. They also implied that the same bug was responsible for some people getting only a sample instead of the full eBook in cases where they bought the full book after browsing the sample. If this update fixed the sample problem, then what's still causing the hangup with my nook and its confusion over multi-volume sets?

Re: Update Notes

page turns are definitely signficantly improved. very happy with that. It may still be SLIGHTLY slower than the kindle 2 with the lastest update but we are talking fractions of a second now.

dracula does seem to take an innordinate amount of time to format. every other book i have formats in 5-10 seconds so i'm not sure what is going on with that.

Re: Update Notes

My free copy of "Dracula" takes only 9 seconds to format. (Yes, I just counted.)

Re: Update Notes

Definitely 'peppier' as others have commented. BTW, the download seemed very slow until I turned on WiFi (home). Within a minute, my Nook seemed to have switched over and it only took about 10 minutes to complete the update download. Went out for lunch and to take care of some errands, and when I came back Nook was in sleep mode. I've noticed already that from sleep to wake, it's coming back faster. All transitions are noticeably (but not perfectly) faster. For sure the page-turn has stopped the half-second "I've gone blind!" blinky stuff, much cleaner. It also seems to me that access the various function pages goes faster. My only complaint so far is the lack of ability to organize My Documents -- it *has* turned into a random jumble. It'd also be nice to be able to organize all the docs, both BN and my own, by categories and subcategories... but I figure that's down the road. For now, the device itself has, in my opinion, gotten far more usable. Now if I could just get my New Yorker emagazine download... I think subscriptions are still fubar'd.
