Because when I do, a box called "nook (E
" pops up asking what Windows wants to do with the Pictures, and then nothing else shows up. Is this all thats supposed to happen? My nook says "If you want to use your nook and continue charging, please choose Eject or Unmount from the menu for the nook drive on your computer."
How do I do this? Thanks!!

That's it, that's all that's supposed to happen. If you want to eject the nook, you can browse "My Computer and Find the Nook, right click and eject. What are you trying to do with the nook on your computer?

Not quite, what's supposed to happen is this:
The nook mounts it's internal sd card and maps itself to a drive on your computer from which you can browse several folders including your "my Documents" folder where you can drag and drop files for reading
If your computer is asking you about what you want to do with pictures, it is obviously detecting it as a digital camera or similar device, you have a driver issue.
Go into device manager and search your usb devices and try to find an entry for a digital camera, then right click that item and click "uninstall". Unplug your nook, reboot, and then reconnect and let windows attempt to find the correct driver again. If the same issue occurs, it might be time to call B&N support and ask for a driver, or you can try it on a different computer and copy whatever driver makes it work from that PC to your main PC. Good luck!

The image thing pops up for mine, but I just close it and go to 'my computer'.
The nook shows up as a drive there and I can side load whatever I want into the 'my documents' folder. The pop-up window doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I don't even deal with the file browsers anymore. I let Calibre take care of it.

If your computer is asking you about what you want to do with pictures, it is obviously detecting it as a digital camera or similar device, you have a driver issue.
As with most flash drive devices (thumb drive, camera, phone, GPS, iPod, etc)
the device will appear as a Removeable Disk Drive -
one drive letter for internal memory + one drive letter for SDcard memory.
hmmm - I would NOT delete any camera drivers based upon getting the Windows "what do you want to do" message. My normal flash/thumb drives will be opened, media content detected, and the Windows "what do you want to do" message will always pop up - unless it's been suppressed... I just "x" out or click do nothing.... Not sure what "normal" is for the nook.... which of course - is your question ![]()
Lastly - if you have any local library content you want to download and copy across, that will require Adobe Digital Editions as the PC software - and the nook via USB will appear as another device/bookshelf.

Not exactly there is no driver issue is present. What I suspect is that the user is encountering the autoplay pop-up dialog box in WXP, Vista, etc. that occurs when a device is plugged in and prompts the user to either open to view for files, pictures, etc. It really isn't necessary to respond unless a user wants to.perform a specific task. If the user wants to open the folders and look at particular files, it can be done via this dialog box or by closing it and looking for the nook as an accessory drive. The first time that the nook is connected to a Vista computer, a small rectangular box will appear in the lower right corner indicating that a device has been detected and it is, "Installing device driver software". Subsequently, everytime the nook is plugged into the computer, the drivers are automatically loaded and the autoplay prompt pops up unless the user has made prior attributes. In terms of the prompt on the nook, the default is to have the nook act like an external drive. As such, the screen indicates that it isn't usable or being recharged unless the user right clicks on the drive (under my computer) and then clicks eject. Doing so disables the drive and allows the nook to be charged. Make sense?
Correct, Doc_R.
When I plug in my nook to my PC via the USB, I get a AutoPlay popup for both my internal and external drive. I'm using Windows 7 so the screenshots below will appear different in Windows XP.
My internal drive (nook drive)

My external drive (microSD card)

Screenshot of Ejecting or Unmounting nook drive under Computer (or My Computer in Windows XP).I'm noticing my nook from time to time will charge even while my drives are mounted. It usually occurs when my battery level is less than 80%. Otherwise, it won't charge while mounted to my PC.

Ah the joys of a mac! It just shows up as another drive conveniently titled "nook" on my desktop and I click it open to drag stuff into folders. To eject it, I just drag the icon that says "nook" to the trash can. Voila! ![]()

Dang! Even in a book forum I see the beginnings of a Mac vs PC vs Linux battle brewing.

I have a Macbook Pro and the experience is as seamless on my Windows 7 PC as well.
There's virtually no difference now between Mac or PC (Windows 7) besides the user interface. Macs just tend to have less hardware and driver issues.
