Re: Which is better? Nook or Kindle?

If they add Adobe Digital Editions and ePub support to Kindle, that will be great. Time will tell. The question is are they more interested in selling Kindles (profit margin) or books (much, much lower profit margin, and on many titles, a loss). If the answer is the latter, they'll convert to ePub and Adobe Digital Editions. If the answer is they have a preference to the former, they won't.
Adding PDF was a different situation. It doesn't open up anything on the Kindle, or prevent any lock in for DRM-laden popular book sales. And by the way, It was nothing but a response to the nook, which had recently been announced and had native PDF support. People saw that, the Kindle DX's PDF support and then wanted to know about the Kindle and why It didn't do the same.

I doubt Amazon will change it's own format but adding ePub to it's Kindle would be different.  Remember that Amazon doesn't "need" to sell more books.  It has a thriving business with many other product lines.  Whereas B&N has only books/DVDs for the most part.  This is it's core business.  It has to lower prices to compete.  In addition, It has the overhead of its stores so It has to be bound by some limitations.  Amazon, could cut prices to a loss and not be severely impacted.  Selling more ebooks than physical books does not hurt it's business where It could with B&N if It really took off with the nook.  We know Kindle 3 is coming and based upon the last launch probably later this Spring.  Amazon has already launched the Global DX so it's focus can now be on the Kindle 3.
