e-book purchases - sales tax?

Do we get charged local sales tax on e-book purchases?

Re: e-book purchases - sales tax?

My assumption is that the same tax rules that apply to hardcopy books also apply to eBooks.  That is, if you live in a state with a BN store, then you would be charged applicable sales tax.  I live in CT which has 6% sales tax.  If I buy a $9.99 book from BN bricks and mortar or bn.com, I get charged an extra 0.60 because there are BN stores in CT.  If I buy from Target or Wal-Mart the same holds true.  If I buy from Amazon then I get charged no sales tax at time of purchase because there is no Amazon location in CT.

Appreciate your feedback. That's my assumption as well, but figured it was worth getting info from someone who had ordered them in the past. Probably too much to hope that we could get away without having to pay it!

I ordered an eBook a few days ago from BN.com and I was not charged sales tax. I generally pay 7.5% on book purchases from BN.com, so I was pleasantly surprised! Tax is charged on the nook and all nook accessories, but the eBooks are tax free!

I bought an eBook yesterday, and I was charged sales tax. My book was $4.99, and I paid $0.40 tax on my purchase.
