Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Barnes & Noble,

Quesiton 1:  Will the firmware on this device be upgradeable?

Question 2:  Does nook have the physical hardware required for text to speech?

Question 3:  Would firmware upgrades potential lead to text to speech enablization?

1: B&N has stated that they will be providing Over-the-Air updates to the nook.

2: Sure, it has speakers and a headphone jack.  Aside from that, the processor on board should be more than enough to handle it.

3: Potentially? Yes.  Will B&N actually provide the functionality? Maybe, maybe not...they haven't made any guarantees about Text-To-Speech.

Re: nook: Text to Speech?

I completely agree!!!  Text-to-speech is a fantastic feature and is the main thing that makes me like Kindle over Nook.

Re: Firmware Upgrade: Would this bring the possibility of Text to Speech

It is my advice to Barnes and Noble and the creators of the nook to create a text-to-speech function. Although this is not the main deciding factor for many nook users, there is still a portion of the market that will make their decision between the nook and the kindle because of this feature. It would be wise for the company not to ignore this thread of feedback. Also, if possible, it should be provided as an update for current nook owners. I do not currently own a nook, so it makes no difference to me; however, for how long the product has been on the market, it is clear that any update in the product should not be at an additional cost to current nook users.

Re: Firmware Upgrade: Would this bring the possibility of Text to Speech

I agree! I really love the look and feel of the Nook-plus the lending feature and removable battery etc., but the text to speach IS a deal breaker. I want to hear the newspaper while driving to work. I am also on the road during my work day and this would ease alot of stress. A doctor at my medical center let me listen to his Kindle's speech and NOT BAD!! Also the goal, I thought is to reduce print matter and paper waste---so true innovations for the future should include: Strong cases so children carry their own ereaders with all their schoolbooks on them... Text to speech to read to pre readers and those learning to read A "deal" wherein you can bring your print books to your local library, hospital etc. and donate them. They verify you gave away the book you purchased and you get that book downloaded on your ereader...yes, that may mean some potential profit gone in the short run--but they are creating a world that no longer has use for paper print books AND creating a demand for every member of every household to have an e-reader--like we have cell phones....
