A more recent phenomenon is script tracking sites, such as Script Shark, InkTip and Trigger Street. These sites, through a variety of methods, involve uploading your script for review, either by other writers like yourself, or by industry professionals. When a script gets consistently high marks, it works its way up through the ranks where it might get noticed by someone important.
Contests and tracking sites can be a legitimate way to market your screenplay. But at the same time, it’s important to be discerning. Participating in these competitions usually involves an entry fee, and after a while, those fees can really add up. Make sure you research any contest or tracking site before you enter to ensure that the potential pay-off is worth the cost.
