I'm a writer of screenplays and I would like to know what the average amount of rewrites are normal for a script

there is no 'average' number of rewrites, nothing governing how many times one must go over their work to make sure it's spot-on perfect. It's not an exact science at all. You revise until you are done, then stop... then go back a few weeks later and revise again!! Lather, rinse, repeat until you are satisfied that the project is 'complete', then have a few people whose opinion you trust read what you have written (note I did not say Friends, as it is usually best to not trust the judgment of those closest to you...), then revise again, as you see fit, according to the input received from those readers. Of course, you don't have to follow every lick of advice given, but sift thru and take note of the recurring issues that come up, and go from there...
then, when you are ready to try to make The Big Sell, be ready for MORE REVISIONS!! as per instructions from The Big Guys with the BIG WALLETS!!
not much more to say than that, I guess. Not that I've sold anything, or even tried. Just the way I presume it to go... your mileage may vary
good luck!!

I no longer regret that I have no quote, quip or anecdote to share with my countrymen... how about all y'all?
