Chapter by Chapter: 15 - 21 (No Spoilers, Please!)

For chapter-by-chapter discussion, as people read.  Please don't post anything from the plot that happens after Chapter 21!

This part is so good. Now we get to see the real Colin, thanks to Mary. They give each other a taste of their own medicine. The only one who's not afraid of a spoiled child is another spoiled child!
The descriptions of the garden are so well written. I think Dickon and the garden are both magical, the way they help Mary and Colin. I love when Mary speaks Yorkshire. And the way Colin commands everyone is very funny.

I think that part of the point is that neither one knows that they are spoiled. Both have been totally indulged, neither has had anybody (until Mary comes across Martha) even suggest that maybe they have been spoiled, or that maybe there is a part of life that requires that you do some things for yourself and not that you just rely on others to bend and bow to your every whim.

From two parts of the world thousands of miles apart and at least that much different in culture you get to children who have in fact been treated very similarly and have very much the same issues.

If Martha had been allowed to care for Colin without the interference of others, as she was for Mary, Colin would be a very different child!
