Dead and/or Neglectful Parents

I'm interested in the way Colin's mother seems to be around "in spirit" through the garden.  What do you make of this?  His father, grieving for his dead wife, neglects Colin.  In contrast, Mary's parents seem almost entirely out of the picture, even when living.

Like the neglected garden, the children need attention, fresh air and sunshine, in order to come to life.  It's interesting how this 'coming to life' also involves a growing empathy for others on the part of both children.
