As for myself, this story was just a bunch of good clean fun. Yes, it has all of the earmarks of Hemingway's genius blah blah blah, but in the final analysis it's just a fun read (if you don't object to a story about boxing).
I was particularly amused by the double cross that's revealed at the end. It took me a few mintes to figure it out.
I think a great deal of Hemingway's genius is that he engages the reader in trying to figure out the puzzles he's concocted.
