Alice Hoffman's writing seems to slip between having a fast-paced, urban quality to it, and being majestically poetry, even richly gothic. What are your earliest impressions of our characters, the settings, and the writing style we are immersed in here?

I like Alice Hoffman's prose, especially in this book. I like how it includes just enough fantasy to intrigue me with the realistic style. What is the urban quality of the book? I am not sure of that term.

Hi Johanna,
I only mean that it reads quickly, that the language is contemporary, and the the setting is (mostly) in the city--specifically London. There are really fantastic mythic sorts of things that play a part of these stories, but the language itself feels very down-to-earth. Do you think so?

Dear Rachel,
I understand what you mean by urban quality of writing. It is fast-paced and it is a quick read. I have had to slow myself because I want to concentrate on this book discussion.
Thank you for explaining it to me.
