Mother years are like dog years, so much changes year to year. When I wrote The Middle Place, my girls were in diapers. Now they're in elementary school. They pack their own snacks and put on their own sunblock. But still, if they end up at school without enough to eat or come home with a sunburn, I feel responsible. I want to be that detached mother that lets her children live by their own choices. But, just like my mother, it's hard for me to decouple their choices and my influence.
For more of Kelly's story, read her book The Middle Place. Kelly will be back this Friday to answer questions.

It doesn't get easier. My kids are grown, and my youngest graduates from college in less than a month.
This resonated with me, though:
"I feel responsible. I want to be that detached mother that lets her children live by their own choices."
That never changes.
