It seems it is widely accepted that the locale of "To the Lighthouse" is based on the Stephen's family's country home, Talland House near the village of St. Ives in Wales, where they would spend the summers when the children were small. Anyone interested can visit the Talland House at:

What great links! Putting faces to names makes them come alive. This is what's said about Leslie Stephen's, VW father: "Cameron was dazzled by Leslie Stephen’s “vast intellect,” but also found him “wrapt in gloom, appealing for pity.” Sounds like our Mr. Ramsay!

In looking through the pictures of the Stephen's family members it struck me that Julia, VW's mother, looked reasonably happy and somewhat attractive in the pictures taken when she was still Duckworth but that in those taken after she married Stephens she looked quiet sad and less attractive.
