Quiet expectation filled the room as the children gathered near the fire. Bundled in various somewhat tattered quilts they pressed together to conserve heat, but they knew she would come this night for the howling wind was the voice of her herald. Aster.

"Two o'clock and all is well..." Tim, the night watchman's voice cried rolling like a wave through the hushed streets of the village. A small shadow fidgeted unseen in the lee of the stone built garden wall that bordered the back side of the orphanage. If one chanced to glance up to the third storey windows, a sea of small, thin faces were discernible through the parted curtains; tonight was the night.

"Her voice is a whisper, a constant ripple in my mind, Marcus," Lukas admitted his expression weary. "I've left too many things unsaid for too long. It will all come to naught."

Leonard had two suits. One, he wore to his father’s funeral. The other he was saving for his own.

This was farewell, forever and always, the only way back was forward, braving the fire of things to come.

Nearly three am on the beach and still, no flickering flashlight, even way off in the distance.

There was a stillness in this place, a vibrant stillness, patiently waiting for her to return.

The words written here are the last of their kind. The last truth in a word run made. Read them, protect them and act upon them...Before it is too late.

Though this thread won't be active through the rest of the year, I hope those of you who have participated keep up with a first line every week--through 2012 and perhaps beyond. It's been great reading everyone's opening lines and seeing the range and creativity for possible beginnings. Mine your first lines when you're looking for inspiration or ideas for a new project. Good luck!
