Character Names?

How do you come up with your names for stories? And part two if you choose to what are some of your favorite fictional names? Doesn't have to be one of your characters on secoond part just names you like.

Re: Character Names?

To come up names, I just look at the character's personality/what happens to the character during the story, that has to do with the name. It's kind of hard to look for the name though... And my favorite name I made is Arena, weird unique name.:smileywink:

Good question! If a name doesn't come with a character, I often just give it some time. As the character forms, a fitting name often rises to the surface. That being said, I do like to scour through lists of names--baby name books and websites, company directories, etc. I don't do this necessarily looking for a specific character name, but by doing it, I have a lot of names tumbling around in my mind.

One favorite name from literature: Quoyle from Annie Proulx's The Shipping News

Re: Character Names?

When I write, I get the general outline of who she/he is going to be... and if I'm in that mood where I just write before thinking, I put a random name in, depending on what I'm thinking- strange or ordinary. And if I want to change it later, then that's fine. But I agree with whoever posted before, what's going to happen to the character? If they're going to develop any powers or insights or what have you, what are they? Many websites have a load of names to choose from and tweak to what you want.

I like 'Seraphiel' which means 'angel of song'. Actually, I have a thing for angel names... :cathappy:
