Good morning, Stephanie!
I'm sorry to hear that you are homesick. I'm glad you came to this board, maybe we can help you get settled a bit. Being homesick, and away from your family, can certainly affect your writing, your grades, and your personal life. It's distracting, emotionally. I know the feelings, as I have been there a time or two in my life.
I don't know what your writing assignments are, either personal, or for the school paper, but you do need to work through what it is that is stopping you from writing.
You might take a cue from your emotions, and write about them. Put them into a character, or situation, or poem, anything that will use those feelings to your advantage. It might be hard to start, at first, but try. Also, give these exercises that Brandi offers this board a try. It will channel some of that focus back to positive thought in writing.
Don't start comparing your grades in high school to your grades in college, college is not high school....it is tuff, and requres much more work. Dorothy, you're not in Kansas anymore! (that's a joke) I don't mean to make light of your situation, I know it's hard on you, but it will pass, just express yourself in the best way you know how, in writing about it. Use this board to do it, as often as you like.
Chat is fine, talk about yourself, but also focus your thoughts on the subject of writing your stories. You can do it here if you like. We'll critique what you write, if you wish. Or we can leave you alone. Whatever works best for you. Look at the subject threads, and find a place to jump in, or start a new one. Join in the readings, challenges, find what makes you happy. Just have fun. Look around at all of the boards and blogs in the B&N community. Make yourself at home. All ages live here! It's a big community of nice people, and we're all here to enjoy ourselves, and I hope you can take advantage of that.
If you need any help, just ask away.
Kathy
Thank you Kathy, this semester I am doing an english compostion class which is mostly essays, and research papers, I also on the campus paper and I write stories for the weekly paper, and I taking a creative writing class too.
Yes I know high school isn't college but, it is frusrating. I was the best student in my graduation class everyone expects me to have success and, on top of that I am homesick. Heck I even miss my little sister who gets on my nerves.

There is nothing wrong with breathing life into a fantasy world. It is one of my favorite places to be. It is just when you start speaking elvish in public that you might need to worry...![]()

Hey Guys,
I am Rob or Shizzle and I am attempting to write a novel. I usually write whenever I feel inspired. I haven't let anybody see my novel up to this point but did post a excerpt from my book in Aspiring Authors posts. I look forward to see what people are writing and get feedback on my novel once I decide its finished.

Hello everyone. My name is Amanda and I am 21 years young. I have a 15 month old son named Braylon.
I have been writing on and off since middle school, but during my Sophomore year of high school I decided to take a creative writing class from a teacher who happens to detest one of my favorite authors (Stephen King). Long story short, she taught me a lot about the art of writing. I actually discovered that I have a small knack for poetry. I have been published, but it was just a poem, not that I am not very proud of myself.
I went through a tough time with my parents during my teen years and writing was my outlet. Now I am going through some things again and I am looking for a little inspiration. I love reading things that other authors have written. I also love having people give me feedback on my things.

Well...
There is always the pony I never did get
. Every year I ask and for some reason they refuse to get it for me. Maybe they think I'm too big for it. Like I would ride it now! It would just be the fact that I had one... Oh well. Maybe one day I'll be rich and buy my own pony! Kind of takes the magic out of it though.

A pony! We should all have a little something from our childhood wishlists on our wishlists today.

Well, as my first Nook is now listed, I guess it's time to drop in here and say hello.
I've lived in Las Vegas for 30 years and have been married for 20.
I had no plans to move to Sin City but a series of strange events found me here instead of where I'd planned to be - Germany. I'd just retired as a Master Sergeant from the US Army and thought I had a gread job offer. The guy who hired me was fired and I had no job and nowhere to go.
I've bounced around a lot in the area of jobs, so here goes -
bought an old Apple II clone and spent 8 years just trying to write - sold just a few little bits of junk here and there.
ran into a guy who played slot machines for a living and he bankrolled me to be one of his team members. If you want to know what that was all about, check out Lost Wages in Las Vegas on lulu.com. There a b&w version for download and POD with a full color version only for download. I played slot machines for this guy for nearly ten years. During that time, I hit three Royal Flushes on the same machine, they shut it down so I moved to another and hit Four Deuces. My next move was a trip to Mexico where I met my wife - the best jackpot I ever hit!
after than followed a stint as a cashier in a pick-a-part junkyard
then driving the Las Vegas CAT but
then giving guided tours throughout the southwest
and spent six years driving a Yellow Cab
At last, a combination of Agent Orange problems and having a busted gut from lifting heavy luggage, I retired to become a full-time writer.
So, here I am. I have one book and a sequel pending with an epublisher. I've uploaded one novel here to Nook and have two more I'm working on.
But, that isn't all! I have started, completed the first, finished the first draft/revision of the second and outlined the third novel about the founding of the Spanish missions in California by Father Junipero Serra.
So, I'll guess I'll hang around here to see what I can pick up to sell more books.

Hello everyone! I am an author of one book so far titled, "Bitten Heart." It's a fiction book based on a vampire named Von; and the book is filled with fantasy and darkness and light. It is about the conflict between darkness and itself, interestingly enough. Well, anyway, among writing poetry and fiction I also like to read and surf the internet for things of my own interest and go on facebook
My name on facebook is also Holly J. Guilfoyle. Well, I hope many people read my book and enjoy it!

Hello everyone, my name is Anthony Nuccio. I am a senior in high school, and I am enrolled in North Central College for the fall of 2011 as a freshman. Writing is one of my passions, as well as reading. I am currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and Heart of Darkness. I hope to become a professional writer someday.
And golden seems the sandy plain.
No habitation meets the eye
Unless in the horizon rim,
Some halfway up the limestone wall,
That spot of black is not a stain
Or shadow, but a cavern hole,
Where someone used to climb and crawl
To rest from his besetting fears.
I see the callus on his soul
The disappearing last of him
And of his race starvation slim,
Oh years ago - ten thousand years.
