Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Re: Not allowed to write a romance

I would write it anything. Just don't let your mom read it or talk about it when your moms around. If you have a good idea for a romance novel then i think you should pursue it. If you need to keep it a secret from your mother. Its the only thing that i could think of for you to do. :smileywink:  Good luck!

Re: Not allowed to write a romance

I concur! I know it feels like you might be disobeying your parents' will, but you have a story that needs to be told, and I don't think they should forbid you to write about it. A while back a faced a simillar problem: I was writing the beginning of a story on Greek mythology, but I was afraid my parents wouldn't approve because of the whole "gods and goddesses" thing. Neither ever found out I was writing it, but I eventually moved on to a different story.

Anyways. I hope it all works out.

Re: Not allowed to write a romance

In the USA we have the freedom of speech so you can write what you want (that may include sneaking the writing so she doesn't know about it. Has she ever given you reasons why you shouldn't? If she has a good reason maybe you shouldn't but I don't think that romance is bad.

Re: Not allowed to write a romance

Well, I don't think writing a romance would be any problem...depending on what's in it. I mean, there's absolutely nothing wrong with writing/reading about a relationship that's romantic. You see people holding hands, kissing everyday...no biggie. I guess it would be more of a problem if you were going to write a little more graphic stuff. That might be the problem.
