This part is so far my favorite one to write. I hope you guys enjoy it, thoughs who have been following the story.
Part 3
“You can’t pretend you didn’t know this was coming,” Kaity’s mother said on the other line of the phone.
“Mom, come on! You aren’t seriously putting this on me are you?” Kaity asked.
“I’m just saying, it was pretty obvious how he felt about you,” Her mother said.
“But you’re my mother; you should have known that I didn’t feel the same. Why didn’t you tell him?” Kaity asked, anger rising. “Did you actually think I would say yes? Is that why you and dad came? What were you expecting? Don’t you know how unrealistic that is-“
“Hey, hold on sweetheart! You’re going to give your mother a headache. And for the record, your father proposed to me on our second date.”
“Now I’m convinced there’s something wrong with our family…”
“Honey, I’m sorry, I really am, but maybe you should talk to Michael. You aren’t just going to forget about him just because he’s in love with you. You two are best friends after all.”
Kaity stared out her window, where she saw her favorite tree. Well, there were actually two trees, and they were intertwined together. But one of the trees looked as if it were trying to rip away, so to become independent, so to get away from the suffocating presence of the other tree, branching out to the far left.
Or maybe, Kaity was interpreting the tree’s behavior on her own life.
“Yeah, maybe…” Kaity said.
“That’s the spirit honey!” Her mother said, sounding much more cheerful. “You can’t just forget about your friends, even when they don’t act the way you want them to.”
“How do you always make such crazy situations sound so reasonable?” Kaity asked.
“Because I’m a mom and we always know what’s best.”
* * *
Michael was alone in his apartment, a cigarette in his mouth. He did not realize that half of it had already burned away, the smoke rising carelessly in the air.
His entire apartment was full of trash, the kitchen a complete mess, food scraps littered on the ground, the TV showing the news, covered halfway by a towel.
Why doesn’t she love me?
He never felt more pathetic in his life. These thoughts he was thinking, they were wrong, but his mind never hesitated to repeat those same five words over and over again, producing the same fresh flow of pain.
“You know, feng shui specialists say that a dirty house is a clear sign of a messed up life,” said a man’s voice from behind.
“Who’s there?” Michael said, turning around quickly, the cigarette flying out his mouth and through the window.
There stood a tall, beautiful man with a cleanly shaven face, shiny, black hair, and a smile that was more brilliant than any superstar Michael has ever seen. He was wearing a dark suit, and didn’t seem to fit into the humungous mess of Michael’s apartment.
“Who the hell are you?” Michael said, fear rising.
“Calm down, brother,” the man said, “I’m here to help.”
Michael was silent for a few moments.
Great, just my luck, maybe this guy is from the CIA, needs a test subject or something.
“Now that’s amusing!” The man said, laughing hardly. “CIA, ha!”
“What the hell! Did you just read my mind?” Michael yelled in hysteria.
“Well, duh.” The man said. “Michael, don’t you remember me?”
“I’ve never met you in my life!”
The man began laughing.
“Why are you so upset? Michael, you don’t need to be afraid, I’m your guardian angel.”
And it was right there and then that Michael was quite certain he had gone completely insane.
“Insane, no, but overly emotional, quite so,” the angel said.
Michael, who was completely certain that he was going crazy, rolled himself into a ball, and prayed this hallucination, would go away.
“Lord, make him go away, make him go away, I dont want to be crazy,” He moaned to himself, truly in much greater agony.
All was silent, and when he opened his eyes, the man was gone.
There was a knock on the door. “Michael, are you there?” said Kaity’s voice from outside.
