Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Popular books

What makes a book popular?

Does anyone know of any well written popular books?

I'm looking for popular fiction and weight loss books? They can be directed towards younger audiences as well as adults.

Thank you.

Re: Popular books

As far as looking for well written, popular books, check out the Book (Sale) Rankings here on B&N (and Amazon).  This will tell you at least what books everyone else is currently buying and probably recommending.

And for weight loss books, just enter those words into the above "Search For Users" box, and hit GO.

I don't know of any book category for just "popular books".  Best to check out the Rankings, or the Recommended or Reviewed at on-line bookstores like this.

As far as "what makes a book popular?", check out the best-selling author interviews here on B&N.  Or ask that very question the next time an author is open to questions.

On the subject of weight loss, you might want to check out the story in today's (4/20/09) Los Angeles Times (on-line), about "lip gloss appetite suppressant."

Re: Popular books

In addition to online rankings, check out the bestseller lists, like the one the NY Times publishes. That, at least, lets you know which books are selling best. As to what makes a book sell so well, it seems like a combination of great writing, intriguing idea, and strong marketing.
