I think it would be a good idea to know each other's age..
let me start: I'm 14..born on Septemer 10.
PLease feel free to answer..thank you..
P.S. I've noticed that writing room is becoming rather dead so I thought of lightening it up a bit.

It's not the years, it's the miles that count.
When I was 14, I'd already had two short stories in national publications.
Now, most of my grandchildren are older than you.
Re: the group being dead -- There are enough posters here for the important things.
I don't recall seeing your entries or crits for the challenges. Maybe if you participate more, you'll attract others.

Am I offending you, Capuchin? If I am then I'm sorry; I don't mean any harm. But really I noticed that the Writing Room has been rather dead..It is the same as I left it yesterday...

Hi Moon!
I don't know why age so fascinates the young. But if that's a "marker" you want to use to evaluate other posters, why not?
I just turned 60. And I finally published my first book last year.

Not at all. I was just trying to add some perspective (which I think every good writer needs).
Numeric age is most important locally -- an inner-city teen's experiences with gangs and a rural teen's helping out with the birthing of cows and horses means widely different perspectives and types of maturity.
It also varies significantly by person -- as a teen, I was always considered very serious and mature, but now, when you might expect me to be immersed in classics, I'm really into mangas and japanimation.
As for the board -- these things cycle. Every group goes through periods of inactivity.
One lesson I learned from Usenet -- if you want to see more activity, be more active. If people click through and see nothing interesting, they're less likely to visit again. By posting your stories or excerpts, you'll give them a reason to stick around.

wow! you've published your own book? wow! that is so awesome! what kind of book was it? what's the title? wow..yes, that's all I can say - wow..it must be a really great book!
Yes it kinds of fascinates me to know each other's age though it kind of ticks me off when I learn that I'm the youngest - which usually happen..I hated to be the youngest cause it makes me feel small..and guess what?? Im the youngest in my siblings ..ugh..

Hi Moon!
No need to feel small and insignificant, because you are the youngest! We have several writers in this discussion who are very young (seventh grade). And young readers and writers seem more mature for their age anyway, since reading and writing equates to "thinking".
And if you believe Birth Order studies, the youngest sibling in a family is the most outgoing and sociable. Mainly since they are constantly "negotiating" for their parents' time and attention around older siblings.
Yeah, I'm one of those dreaded POD (Print On Demand) authors, which means I self-publish. I'm writing a Young Adult Science Fiction series, "Chronicles of Mathias". (Volumes I and II are available here on B&N.)

I'm in 7th grade.
I have a younger sister in 2nd grade. She is pretty outgoing.
I'm the oldest sibling- Do you know what that is?

I was always tall for my age (finally topped out at 6'4"), but I was usually the shortest boy in my class because I was so much younger than everyone else.
One thing I observed was how the tall guys stood out. While that might seem like a good thing, it meant they were easily picked out for duty (washing blackboards, shoveling sidewalks, etc.), and they were as stealthy as giraffes.
It was a major change in my life when I got into a group where I couldn't "innocently" step behind someone to disappear (if I told you even a tiny fraction of the things I got by with in school, I'd be accused of corrupting a minor).
Consider Piet Hein's grook:
REFLECTION ON SIZE
Small people often overrate
the charm of being tall;
which is, that you appreciate
the charm of being small.

What's your height? Mine's 5'2...and I'm ashamed of it..cause not only does it makes me look more younger, it also makes feel left out..I mean most of the people I met are taller than me...
but I agree with ya all, I shouldn't be bothered by my height cause, who cares about looks anyway??

Hi Tiffany!
Birth Order studies are controversial, and deal with studied "trends" rather than carved-in-stone "categories". Most agree that Birth Order is more a reflection of parents' expectations, rather than a child's personality. (You can look up "Birth Order" in wikipedia.)
The oldest child is supposed to be the most mature and intellectual, and many times is the sibling most "driven" to succeed. The oldest child is frequently treated as an adult by parents, who may confide or talk to them like a peer. So the oldest child is said to mature the fastest, and carries that over into a drive-to-succeed in their chosen profession. This is the child parents expect more from, according to Birth Order studies. Which sometimes takes the pressure off young siblings, who are more likely to be artistic, or go into professions that don't produce stock portfolios or homes in Tahiti.
For a long while, studies centered on the poor Middle Child. This sibling has to learn to "get what they want/need" around the youngest Social Butterfly and the oldest Driven To Succeed siblings. Thus the middle child many times makes an excellent Manager when grown, since they've learned to "negotiate" with vastly different personalities in their own family upbringing.
But, as I said, these are trends that don't always hold true. I'm the oldest sibling in my family, but I've always had more of an artistic personality. And, at 60, my bank balance certainly doesn't reflect any Drive To Succeed!

I'm 23, though I already mistake my age as 22 and 24 regularly. I'm currently working on my first novel, which has become a challenge with marriage and a career!
I think this is a great topic, and should be used just as it was proposed: a light-hearted ice-breaker.
It's unfortunate that some people feel uncomfortable about their age. Some seem "young" and afraid to voice their opinion and others "old" and obliged that their every word should be novel and critical. I'm certain that at least part of this is the absinthe talking, but, for my part, I love knowing the personal stories behind the poetry, and I feel that perceived age should not be seen as a perquisite of exceptional writing, not an expectation.

Moon Seeker-
I agree with you. I don't really care about my looks. I mean, I care, It's just I only care about what's inside, not out. You know? But If I HAD to looks very nice for something- I would.
Thanks marylin. I guess that does kinda describe me. My little sister is VERY WILD. :] Sometimes I worry about her. LOL
But I feel like no one at school because I'm so short, and people don't see me, and since I'm so short at P.E class no one picks me to be on their team cause I'm short and ect. But, I thought, Well most people don't care about their grades, while I do, and I thought "You might be popular, tall and 'cool' now. But just wait intill I'm getting a great job (I want to be an author, cook, and photogarpher)"
But, I should probley let you all be now.
Bye.

Well moonseeker, last time I got my hieght checked I was 4'7. Some people 'make fun' and say I have a rare disease, but my doctor said that I'm 100% fine. But there you go.
Oh, on my first post, I ment shortest kid, not tallest ked.
