Definitely a deal breaker. I was about to buy it right now, but then I thought about this and decided to do a quick research to see if this feature was available. Now that I know that it's not, I'm definitely going to get a Kindle. It's sad because Nook seems to be much better!! But I spend too much time outside the US (and might at some point relocate) so I cannot afford being forced to buy books only when I'm in the US.
You should really do something about this!!

nook automatically detects Wi-Fi hot spots and automatically switches to use a Wi-Fi connection.
You can configure nook to a local network as long as you have the SSID and password.

one more question i have is ...how do you use the wifi? do you need to have a user and pass for the local network? lets say you need to buy wireless time from the locatoin you're in. And you buy a pass for an hour or whatever, is there some interface on the Nook that lets you first detect whate wifi networks are available and then enter a user and/or pass to access them?

Thanks for your inquiry fxpro888. At this time you cannot purchase eBooks from Barnes & Noble outside of the United States.
We know that people all over the world are interested in our eBooks offerings, but we must comply with copyright rules governing the sale and use of digital content. These rules currently require that all eBook purchases from our website be made within the United States and U.S. Territories (or Canada, beginning in December). We are investigating options that will help safeguard author and publisher rights while making eBooks available for purchase outside the above-named areas.

if you can use wi-fi to access the nook bookstore then it doesnt matter if youre in timbuktu you can still purchase from their online bookstore, unless, they filter IPs. Which is rediculous if they did, but par for the course from these mega-US retail companies.
can we purchase a book while overseas if we connect the nook to our computer via usb? thats seems probable? whats the verdict?

hey everyone... i thought the answers above were a bit confusing also. saw this in the official nook FAQ Travel section (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/support/)
"Can I use my nook when traveling abroad?
Yes, when you travel abroad, you can read any files that are already on your nook. You can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots that do not use proxy security settings, such those commonly used in hotels, and download eBooks and subscriptions already in your online digital Library. You cannot, however, purchase additional eBooks and subscriptions."
"Will new issues of eNewspapers and eMagazines be downloaded to my nook while I'm traveling?
Yes, if you are traveling in the United States, or if you are abroad but connected to a supported Wi-Fi hotspot, new issues are delivered to your online digital Library in both cases. When travelling abroad without Wi-Fi access, new issues are not downloaded to your nook (automatically or manually)."
Based on this, you cannot purchase books abroad like you can on the international kindle. Kind of disappointing because based on other features I would much rather have a nook! But the ability to download internationally is a deal breaker for me.

I don't understand why I can't buy a book while in another country. If I can connect via wi - fi, what is the issue?
Will this problem be solved? If it will not be solved, can I UN purchase my nook? It makes no sense if this is not a global device. Barnes and specially Noble, should think globaly, not 1970' local.

What I think is not clear is that you continue to refer to 'your digital locker,' without explaining what this is. If it is a download area for use on-line with a PC, then books can be purchased abroad and simply transferred from that locker to the Nook. Am I correct?

Kevin,
Your answer was a little vague. If I am in Italy (on a US military installation), can I still buy content online, put it into my digital locker, then sync up my Nook via Wi-Fi? I will be back in the US in a couple years but if I can't download my books while here then I may as well buy a Kindle and wait until I get back to the US to buy the (by then) 2nd or 3rd generation Nook.
Thanks!
Charlie

I am military stationed overseas with an APO address. Barnes and Noble will ship the Nook to me so will I be able to download books or would I just be getting a paperweight in the mail? Is the download filtered by IP address or by my credit card address (like iTunes)?

Because the questions keep coming in, we'll repeat the answer here.
You can certainly read any content on your nook whereever you are. And if you're on Wi-Fi, you can access and download any content in your digital locker. (This includes subscription content that has been delivered during your travels.) But you cannot buy new content for nook when you are overseas.
We're looking at our international options, but don't have any news on that front right now. Thanks again for the question.

Hi!
I am currently in NY and would really like to buy Nook. However I am moving back to Singapore soon and wonder if I will be able to use Nook back in Singapore. If i am unable to use the wireless function back there, can i download books from BN.com on pc and transfer it to my Nook via USB?

there are some advantages over the kindle: swappable battery, memory expansion, color touchscreen.
also, since its on the at&t network, b&n can figure out something later and this product should still work internationally.
alternatively, i would think if you had access to a computer in europe(or wherever), you could download your book to your pc, and then put it on a microsd card to read it on the nook.
my 2 cents.

I agree with you. I'm in Brazil and so much considering getting a Kindle.
