Issues with HD+

My HD+ is 2 weeks old and for the most part I am liking it.  I have the newest update, it loaded when I registered it.  Anyway, there are a few quirks and outright problem (I think) that I would like to share here and see if there is anything that can be done.

 

1.  Books that won't leave the wish list if you buy them outside the wish list.  I have seen this issue mentioned in other threads, but I haven't seen a resolution.  The books in the wishlist show a "read" button instead of a "buy" button.  When I go to the info page for the book, there is no wish list icon for me to uncheck.  So my paid for book is stuck in the wish list with no way that I can see to remove it.  It's annoying.

 

2  Duplicate books appearing without anyway to remove them.  Somehow I have managed to get 2 copies of the Quick Start Guide on my HD+.  Of course, I have no idea what I might have done to do that.  I can't delete either one, they both give the same options, none of which are "delete".  I also have a duplicate book in my wish list, one of the ones I purchased outside the list that now only allow me to read them.  How did that happen? I don't know.

 

3.  I have discovered some ebooks that are on bn.com that I cannot find on my HD+, no matter how I search.  For example, the author Kris DeLake and her book, Assassins in Love.  I can find it on bn.com website, and I actually have it on my bn.com wish list.  But it does not show up in the HD+ store list, no matter whether I search by the title or the author.

 

To me, problems 1 and 2 are more an annoyance at this time, but item 3 is disturbing.  It's a problem if I can't trust the store on the HD+ to have the books I want to read show up.  There also appears to be a problem trusting that all pre-orders show up on the HD+.  Until it actually went on sale, the book Alien in the House by Gini Koch did not show on the HD+, even though I could find it on bn.com.  I haven't seen this particular problem posted by users, although I certainly could have missed it.

 

I hope something can be done for these issues.

Twitter keeps redownloading in 2.1 update

I had the 1st gen nook, which died just before the 1 year warranty.  Was replaced with  a new Simple touch.  After almost a year, had problems with screen freezing.  Store support couldn't fix it even after hard reset, so was given another one.

I paid for the 2 year plan with that one.

After less than 4 months, screen freezing again!

This time, the store didn't bother trying to fix it - just gave me a 'certified' reused.  Ok.  AND MADE ME PAY $20.00 FOR ANOTHER 2 YEARS BECAUSE IT IS SET TO THE SERIAL # AND NOT THE USER!!!!

And guess what?  After having this 'certified' Nook for 3 DAYS, it is frozen again.  I can't unlock.  It is fully powered and still won't unlock.  I did manage to get it to power down by holding the button for about 30 seconds and it is still locked.

I am totally fed up and am glad that most of the books I have on this thing were free friday or sale books, because if BN makes me pay for the two year plan again, I WILL switch to the Kindle.  My husband has had his for a few years and no problems.

Give me one good reason I should stay with the Nook?

One issue im having with Chrome in the update to Googleness.. Even though its unchecked, Chrome does NOT tend to load the mobile/tablet version of websites even with the Load desktop version option unchecked... Some websites are not very usable (cough MSN/Hotmail/Outlook) when they display in desktop format... The browser option to switch formats is broken...

I have followed the update instructions meticulously, but my nook does not recognize the file or update the software. I have downloaded the update file twice, and I have tried installing it to my nook from 3 different computers with the same result. OTA update is not an option for me.

 

I have contacted support chat and was instructed how to install the update as I had already done according to the instructions on the update page.

While I'm overall quite pleased with the 2.1 update so fat, thre are a couple of issues I've run into.

First, the method for taking a screen shot - holding the n button and pressing volume down no longer works. I'd much rather have that functionality restored than have to resort to a 3rd party app.

 

Second, on my Nook Color, I had purchased QuickOffice Pro, but lost access to that app when moving to the Nook HD. After the 2.1 update, The Play store lists Quick Office Pro as compatible with the Nook HD.

What I want to know is why hasn't this app been approved by B&N for use on the Nook HD? I do not intend to buy the same application twice, especially when the same app is 3 times the price on the Play store.

 

Lastly, and this may be more of an issue you need to work with Google on, is that the icons for apps in the Play store are for the most part, noticeably lower resolution than the native nook app icons. The look blurry by comparison. It's a minor annoyance, but it detracts from the nice sharp dispay of the HD. I can only imagine it looks even worse on the HD+.

If an application is disabled in Settings, it automatically re-enables itself and can't be disabled permanently.  For example, if you disable Google Talk in order not to get spam chat requests, it will turn itself back on.

Just got the Nook HD+ a couple of days ago and the menus keeping popping up while I'm using it. I'll be reading and the bottom menu will pop up or the settings menu will suddenly appear. It's intermittent but quite annoying to try to turn the page or be trying to type and the menu appears and interrupts. I'm wondering if maybe I got a lemon or if this is because of the recent 2.1.0 update.

DRP Reader, Vanishing/Failed Update Apps, and black bar.

DRP Reader: 

Whenever I try and open .cbz files, I get a pop up saying DRP Reader Failed.

 

Vanishing Apps:

Twitter vanishes every day and I have to reinstall it at least once a day.

 

Failed Update:

Nook prompts me to update an app from the nook version to google play, but then says the app is already installed when it tries to update it. This happens with Office Suite Lite.

 

Black Bar:

The wallpaper no longer fills up the entire screen on the lock screen. Instead, there is a black bar on the bottom.

HD+ is not working well with new software update

I have not found all that is messed up now, but I am very unhappy with all the Google Junk that was forced down that I don't want.

 

My existing Games dont run now no matter what I try, so it may even have lost all my settings and make me start over, if ever it works again.

 

What happened to the Web Browser?  What happened to all my Bookmarks/Favorites ? I do not like Google Browsers and Google Apps all over the place.  I want the older Web Browser back.  How do I get it back.  I want the freedom to choose to use or not to use Google Apps.

 

I don't want to have to register or create accounts in Google or other Apps that I don't want to use.  I want the freedom to choose.

 

You need to fix this newest software update, and give us back more control over our devices.

Older purchases on my Order Status list do not show up in library

I posted this on another board last night but realized that this seems to be the correct forum so I reposted here.

 

I am trying to read a book I purchased last November.  In my order status list on the website I can find the order number for the book and the status there says "in your nook library".  It is not in my Nook library though.  If I look online at my library it does not show up (not normally nor archived).  It is also not showing on my Nook nor using the Nook reader for PC.  I've erased and re-registered my Nook Simple Touch and the probably is exactly the same.  It also does not show up on my wife's Nook Color, we share an account.  The book is still available as a Nook Book so that is not the problem.  Without compiling an extensive list to be sure, it appears that ALL of our older purchases are not showing up in the library. 

 

Has anyone else run in to this?  Any suggestions?

When I click on the Netflix button, the red loading screen comes on for a few seconds and then the screen turns grey. Have tried to reboot many times, and other apps like crackle work just fine. Been going on for a little over a week now. Any thoughts? Thanks.

B&N overcharged my gift cards, again.. On April 19, gift card XXX1125 had $23.44 and gift card XXXX4796 (which was loaded in 4/18) had $25. I then purchased 4 nook books prices were: $14.99, $7.99, $.099, $7.99. $1.99. The total purchase was .$33.95.  I should have a balance of $14.49 remaining, and currently I show no gift cards and a balance of $0.  I called immediately to customer service on 4/19.  It has now been 2 weeks and still no resolution.  This is at least the third time this has happened to me. Twice with preordering as B&N will 'reserve' the amount of the preorder and supposedly when the book finally delivers it will 'release' any over charges.  When I figured out what was happening the first time was over 3 months old and customer service said it was too late. The second time after I started to call daily, I finally received my funds back, but I had the gift card still showing a balance even though incorrect. Now, I show no gift cards, but since I was watching so closely, I know exactly what my balance should be. I guess I will need to start calling daily again. Luckily, I have the full gift card numbers this time.

 

 

I am really nervous if my credit card has been treated the same way.

im trying to pick back up on an e book i purchased about a year and a half ago.  When i try to re-download the book, it says i have to purchase it from the Barnes and Noble store, only thing is im already more then half way through the book, and know i already purchased it.  any suggestions on how to retrieve a VERY lost book?

I have a Nook Simple Touch less than one year old. The Quick Nav button (raised "n") has stopped working. Device is fully charged and I rebooted. The button is not stuck; it just doesn't respond when I press it. I can only wake up the Nook by lightly pressing the power button on the back but I cannot access my library or the Quick Nav menu

Battery Life on HD's vastly diminished since the Janary 2013 update.

Since my HD was updated to 2.06, battery life has been cut in half. I'm now only getting about 5 hours of reading time, or about 3 hours of video viewing before I have to recharge the battery. If I accidentally leave wi-fi on, almost 50% of the battery charge is lost within a 12-13 hour period of not use.

I downloaded Evernote app from Nook store. There is now an update available. When I download the update it won't run because Nook won't install app that doesn't come from it's store - even though Evernote did. If I send the app to the Cloud and reinstall I get the old version. If I delete the app and go to repurchase it, the store won't allow me to as it says I've already got the app. How am I supposed to update it?

Trying to shop for some new books I am unable to go to the shop and look at a list of books under many of the areas such as Fiction, Fantasy; and most of the others.  Reported it and sounds like a new issue.

Browser Issues

Because there are many apps not available for the Nook HD/HD+ we depend on the browser a lot more to access things like Facebook. This needs a little work. I'm on the current release: 2.06.

 

  • The browser, not infrequently, either freezes or crashes/suddenly closes. When it freezes I have to restart it to get it to be responsive again.
  • There are times where there is a field to fill in and the keyboard covers the field so you can't see what you are typing. There's no way to scroll so you can see or set up the screen ahead of time so the keyboard doesn't cover it. I've run into this on Paypal and Facebook to name a few.
  • It can be very slow and jerky at times.

 

Those are bugs. Then there are usability issues.

 

I wish the bookmarks had an option to not show a thumbnail. At first I liked the feature but as my bookmarks grew it became a pain. I'd like ways to sort them too as well as to have folders to categorize bookmarks.

 

I'd even like a CHOICE of browsers - to be able to use Firefox or Chrome if I wish.

Don't know if this is the right place or not..but the Nook Talk Board seems to have misplaced the last few months of messages. At least that's what is showing both on my pc and my Nook. Last dated message is in Nov of 2012.

Security Issues!

For the past week I have been dealing with a major issue regarding Nook's password security.

 

I changed my password on Barnes and Noble's website due to a possible email hack. After changing the password, I expected to enter it in to my nook, the nook app and the B&N app. That was not the case. I was able to download and purchase books through my Simple Touch, without being prompted for my new password. I was not asked to add my new password to the apps and they downloaded books as well. I rebooted the device and apps and they still did not require the new, updated password. They recognized the email address and that I had used the app before and functioned normally. This means that any device that may know my email address can upload or purchase books without requiring a password.

 

I have called several times this week only get the run around. I changed passwords (again) on the phone and they all told me that they can see books downloading, regardless of the new passwords. I was told there is nothing they can do and that someone should be working on it.

I ended up talking to three different managers throughout the week and all of them said I would get a call back in 24-48 hours... Each time, after three days of waiting, I ended up having to call back. In the meantime, my account is open to people that may know my email.

 

If you use the apps or have a Nook, I suggest you make sure this isn't happening to you too.

I manually updated my NST to version 1.2.1 last night. This afternoon I bought 3 books, 2 pre-orders and 1 allready released. When I tried to download the released book it said "connecting" and stayed there. Since I have never seen "connecting" before I thought it had to be the update. When I came to the boards to see if anyone else was having trouble with the update I saw one person had suggested doing a factory reset. I have done so THREE times now and it still says version 1.2.1! Only now I can't read ANY of my books as they ALL say "connecting"! Since I read almost a book a day this is very upsetting. I am very disappoited with B&N right now.

Even when using publishers defaults I have problems with overlapping content, pages being cutoff, and some pages even have a blank column on the right... Have tried setting publishers defaults on the HD+, archiving/cloud and redownload the book... and it hasn't resolved.. Really would like to see it fixed. Thanks

Is anyone having an issue when trying to a paragraph the highlight selection skips lines and forcing you to highlight things you dont want. I find it very frustrating and ridiculous that I spent all this money on a textbook and the highlighting feature doesnt work correctly. I am running a Macbook Pro Retina with Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Please if anyone knows how to correct this let me know. Thanks.

This is my first post to the B&N Community. I bought my Simple Touch two months ago. The power button did not operate properly and I was not able to even get to the internal instruction manual. The store replaced it with a new one. This worked fine until a few weeks ago when I briefly had problems with the button again. A few days ago I had problems turning it on again. Has anyone had similar problems? Can anything be done about this problem?

I updated to the current 2.06 and email and Web apps disappeared. Ebooks, movies, magazines, and apps disappeared and/or were no longer accessible. So learning from experience, I deregistered and went through the whole set up again, only now I cannot add more than one email. I can add Gmail, but through calendar app settings, but gets weird asking for server name with yahoo and Microsoft emails. I'm really starting to dread these updates.

I don't know what to do. I've been crying for an hour. It took so long to download everything when I upgraded from Nook Color. It's all gone. Everything. I'm just sick about it. Why did they do this? Why?????

The most current version of Netflix does not work on a nook tablet.

Several people have reported netflix loading to a grey screen on the most current version for the nook tablet.   They've also been told that Netflix says it is a problem with B&N.

 

I'm sure B&N will say it is a problem with Netflix.

 

They need to get their developers on the line with each other to work out the bugs.

 

A soft reset does not work, nor does a hard reset to resolve the issue.

 

 

Please look into getting netflix working on the nook tablets again.

The ONLY myfiles content that shows up in the main library book section are those under myfiles/books and these are the only the only content that can be shelved unless they are pdfs. Pdfs do not show up in the main library either.

 

I recently sideloaded some pdf materials to my HD+, some user manuals, some mags unavailable through BN, and some short tutorials. I can read them on my HD+, but I can't shelve them to keep them where I can easily find them in my library. To get to them in myfiles takes several minutes as there is about a 30 sec lag for each level of the library that is opened before I can see what's in that folder. 

 

My options for pdfs when I find them are "clear default launcher" or to delete them. ? These aren't the type of materials that cut into BN's profits so I'm not sure why I'm denied the ability to shelve them.

 

I don't want to convert them to epubs, I prefer to keep them as pdfs as I have found that converting books to epubs works fine, but I don't care to convert photo rich materials to epubs.

 

I really don't understand why we can not shelve ALL of our sideloaded content as we can our sideloaded books. It makes no sense.

This past two weeks, my HD+ has started having problems with my books, both books purchased through BN and my sideloaded books. I'll come back to read after a break and the HD+ has not only lost my place, but will then tell me the book has about a 1/4 the pages that it report prior to my break. I can't use "go to page" because the HD+ thinks there aren't that many pages in the book. I exit the book, try again, sometimes it then works, sometimes I have to reboot to make it work. This has happened to me several times in the last couple of weeks. I am constantly rebooting to fix this. I have rarely ever had to reboot my previous nook devices, but I've had to reboot several times in the past two weeks. I've archived the majority of my ebooks so that I have less that 500 on it at this point so I don't think it's that I have too much on the device. I also removed my sd card last week thinking that would help, but it hasn't.

 

Can we get the sd issue fixed too?

Trouble viewing magazine

Not sure I am posting in the right place but here goes. I am unable to view the January 28, 2013 issue of People magazine. Every time I try to view the magazine I get the error message: "Unfortunately WWReader has stopped working." I have tried archiving and unarchiving and restarted my Nook. I am able to open my other magazines so I am thinking it is an issue with the file itself. Not sure where how to proceed from here. Thanks!

I have a few comics that once sideloaded and I try to open them, the screen goes black and I find myself

where I was before I tried to open them. I have done a fair amount of experiementation and the closest I can get to a core issue is if the comic has a double-page spread (2 pages in a single jpg file) with double the

resolution of a single page.

 

The last comic I tried to open that failed had 1600 (horizontal resolution) single pages and 3200 double

page spread. When I removed the double-page spread the comic opened fine.

 

Now - having a double-page spread is not exactly a new idea with comics so I would "encourage" B&N to

take a look at this issue. And having the double-page interpreted as a single page and displayed as

such would no doubt make it unreadable. No easy solution probably.

I have almost 3,000 eBooks on my Nook - most of which are comics on a 64GB microSD card. As you might imagine my Books list is massive. When I sideload a new book onto the Nook I have an AWFUL time trying to swipe down the list until I get to it.

 

1) From the Search Results I can't shelve a book?

2) From the MyFiles->Books I can't shelve a book?

 

I tried searching for it and opening it. It then appears on my "carosel" on the home page and the list on the bottom of the home page (accessed recently) but neither one of those allow me to shelve it.

 

The only realistic way to shelve a book is to pull the SD card, shelve it, reinsert the card. This seems a bit antiquated. Di B&N not anticapate thousands of eBook their product or am I missing a key capability.

 

If anyone has any idea - please help. This is a serious problem.

We have used the white-space:nowrap; attribute for a couple years in epub and mobi formats. Basically we are wrapping a single word that we don;'t want the reader to wrap becasue they break it incorrectly.

 

An example

 

 

html:
<p><span class="nowrap">This</span> is a stupid eaxample of why we would use the white-space:nowrap; attribute in the text within a paragraph tag. </p>
css:
span.nowrap {
white-space:nowrap; 
}

 

In all the epub readers but the Nook, and in the Nook prior to the latest software update in Oct/Nov time frame this displays fine.  Now in the current Nook the entire <p> acts like it has the nowrap attribute and most of the text falls of the right side. The <p> turns into a one line element!

 

The oddity is that this only happens if the tag with the nowrap attribute accurs first in the parent <p> or <div> 

 

this will not have the bug, notice the character 'T' before the <span> tag.

I was extremely surprised at the size of the update file for the 1.2.1 Software Version update. A 115MB file for a device that only has 256MB? Does this mean I have to keep 120MB or more free for futures updates?

(I am using a 32GB scandisc class4 micro SD card as recommended.)

 

Ghost picture, song and video files can appear in the built in Gallery and Music Player apps. These are duplicate copies of songs, pictures and videos stored on an SD card that won't play. 

Music - if you tap on a ghost, the device skips to the first music file it can play in that album or 'sorry the player does not support this type of audio file' message if whole album is a ghost;

Photo - Gallery shows two or three thumbs of the same photos and blank spaces - you may only see a scattering of pictures interspersed with blank spaces rather than the more usual solid grid of thumbnails. When you click onto a photo to view in full screen, the bar at the bottom of the device shows gaps in the thumbs available for viewing and if you swipe the screen to move to the next photo you get 'Thumbnail not available' message on black screen for the ghosts

Video - Seems to be an 'unsupported' message that comes up when you click on the ghost.

 

This seems to happen when:

- Swapping SD cards over with different file hierarchies, even though I powered down/unmounted before removing sd's;

- Replacing SD card with same hierarchy as used before;

- Trying to create a play list, though it may well be that I had tried to include a music file that had been corrupted during the 'write to SD via USB and device on 2.0.4' process;

- The music player glitches or becomes unresponsive. When you close and open it again, you have ghosts.

-The browser becomes unresponsive. Again, when you close and open you have ghost music, photo and video files.

- Accidently copying a zip file to sd via device usb;

 

These problems are not experienced when the files are stored on device storage.

Proble Purchasing

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post this, if not please forgive me and direct me to the correct place.

 

I'm trying to purchase a Nook book form B&N. It is: Face to Face, Volume 1 by Kenneth Boa. However, when selecting the Nook version of this book, I am taken to Face to Face, Volume 2, which I already own. I have been unable to find a way around this.

 

Can anybody assist?

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and I also wanted to report the following bug when reading magazines.

 

When I have the page curl animation set to "on" and have zoomed in on a page to look at the contents once in awhile I'll notice that the "article view" button at the bottom of the page will disappear. When I zoom out of the page and turn to the next page the page curl animation will be translucent. You can solve this by closing the magazine and reopening. But of course it will do it again at a later point. I can't figure out exactly what causes this - like I said it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but I would say more like 50%.
