Page numbers are missing from the ToC on NST/G in release 1.2.0 and 1.2.1

I'm cross-posting this from the Community Room thread in case the developers are paying more attention here.

 


I did a couple of tests using previously unopened non-fiction freebies:

 

Each of these has a relatively complex multi-level TOC (unlike most fiction books in my collection). The first time I opened each one from the library screen there was a delay of several seconds, not more than five or six. The second and subsequent times were much faster, near instantaneous.

 

This result suggests that the developers have already found a way to cache a more compact, more easily parsed version of the TOC. That should be a good foundation for moving the task to the background. After all, most books don't open on the TOC. You have to wade through the cover, title page, copyright page, foreword, preface, acknowledgments, etc., before you get there, which should provide plenty of time to complete the initial processing of the TOC.

 

Another interesting note: The full-blown multi-level TOC appears in its regular place near the beginning of the book. But when you tap content in the reader menu, you get the old, abbreviated single-level TOC. I wonder what's behind that decision? To me it would make more sense the other way around. Give me the abbreviated TOC in the book body and let me see the full multi-level version on demand. That approach would also provide more time to parse it in the background.

Yes, the approach of only displaying the multilevel TOC on demand is a good one.

 

My thought had been to offer users a preference toggle, but Sun_Cat's is much better and has the same effect, don't try to deal with it unless it's put into play.

@Alex: On another OT note, you can see from the comments here that there's a lot of pent-up demand for a place where we can discuss suggestions, not merely narrowly defined "issues." Mercury_Glitch even created an issue here about that.

 

Please revive the Ideas & Suggestions boards, restore the useful content that was already contributed by your dedicated customers, and keep us informed about what's under development.

I have another problem besides the page numbers being dropped from ToC. I just found out this morning by reading posts here that it is not a nook problem but a design problem.

 

After a few weeks of fretting over the loss of chapter page numbers, I checked many books in my library going back a couple of years and found that previous page numbers were no longer there. I called Nook Support yesterday, 1/18/2013. I was told by the first person I connected to that I had to download and install version 1.2.1. I did this and still found no page numbers. I then called back and connected to a second person who led me to believe that if I connected to WiFi connection, (I do not have a router), and refresh my ToC problem may be fixed. I went to Star Bucks and did this, still no page numbers.

Why is the support crew not forthcoming with this information? Are they not aware that there is nothing I can do to fix this problem?

 

Should I think of Nook Support as Nook Deception from now on?

I wouldn't go as far as deception, rather it's more likely they just don't know.

 

On a store level we aren't told about new features or changes in the devices.  We're given some basic information and then have to hunt for how to actually do things.

 

I'd have to imagine the same is true at CS, except they're given a script to read and go through.  Sometimes you'll get someone who's with it and can think outside of the script.  But more often than not you'll have to go from point a to point b to point c with them even if you're starting at point d.

 

Of course things like this could be avoided if B&N would join the 20th (yes, 20th) century and put actual information in the 'what's new in the version' blurbs that accompany each software update.
