A few weeks ago I noticed the same app on my Nook Tablet and here is the response I received after emaling Support at B&N:

The Woodwing application is used to deliver a rich content on some magazines (eg. video clips, audio clips and etc.). It is similar to "AMV" or Adobe Magazine Viewer which is used in eMagazines as well. Some publishers prefer to use AMV, while others prefer to use Woodwing.

In order to provide a better and richer reading experience for eMagazines, Barnes and Noble is providing these updates free of charge.

Rest assured that these two applications will not affect the performance of your NOOK and do not consume a large amount of space as well. Also, these applications having been mandatory installed will be just like the pre-installed applications that you cannot delete or remove from your NOOK.
