    No Google Play for us

Just read that the Nook HD and HD+ are getting updates that will allow them to access the Google Play store, with access to over 700k apps & games. Left off of the list is the Nook Color. Like the Soup Nazi said, "No Google Play for you!" :smileysad:

TYK, has anyone reached out to BN support to ask if we'll be getting it for the NC?

Some apps won't work well, due to graphics &/or processor need, but there are quite a few "simple" games & apps I'd love to add to my NC, as a backup. Plus, I'd like to give my NC to my parents, to bring them into the e-reader world!

I have contacted B&N support with this complaint of not having access to Google Play and have requested them to again approach management since NC customers should not be left out....

I expect most would move to a different product in the future and it would not be B&N!!!!!

It's really too bad that they are doing this now.  I was looking to buy a tablet for my mom for Christmas this past year.  I weighed cost, ease of use and prominent features and honestly, Nook would have been the winner if it weren't for the lousy app store.  I went with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which she loves.  She has a Nook with Glow Light so I simply downloaded the Nook app to her tablet.  Now she has the best of both worlds.  Nook was taking themselves out of the game, even with loyal Customers, because of that single (but very notable) flaw. I don't know if it's too late (early adopters of Nook Color and Nook Tablet are already feeling shunned) but I hope this move helps put them back on track.

I am so disappointed in Barnes & Noble for the lack of support for the Nook Color.  It is like a waste of money.  I will never and I repeat never;  purchase another Nook device again.  I really hope the Corporate Office reads these posts.  I purchased this device to read my books, browse the web, my email and purchase a few apps.  But most of the apps are extremely costly.  I use my Galaxy Note 2 to read my eBooks & order apps from the Google Playstore and also the Amazon Appstore. : )

I would love to ROOT my Nook Color but I have no clue as to what to do.  : (

                  checkout the N2A micro-SD Card -
you just insert it into the slot on the Nook Color, and it will then boot directly into full Android mode using the uSD Card for all data, software, etc .... no mods to the native NC -

I've also contacted B&N customer support about this travesty. I plan on bringing my NC on a European vacation next month and was hoping to use a free app to view train schedules, but nope - only available from Google Play.

Doesn't B&N realize that by shutting out Google Play, our only alternative for Android apps is ... Amazon? It seems like a poor marketing strategy for B&N to be driving us to their competitor to see what a tablet can do.

Read my reply (#4 above). Just root it with Manualnooter, apply Dalingrin's OC and you should be good to go with Google Play.

Those train schedules are probably available through a web browser. You could always find them and downlad them in advance (so youre not dependent on wifi)

If Barnes and Noble does not give Nook Color an update to allow Google Play then they will be losing not 1 but 3 customers.  With 3 Nook Colors in our house and the fact that all 3 of us buy tons of books that is just money that they will be losing.  If the NC does not get the google play update then this is 3 customers that they will lose.  Forever!  Don't tell me to root, and yes I know how!  I should not have to root to get the same funtionality that others have.  No update to give us google play then the 3 of us will become kindle users.  Period!

My NC is giving me problems (see my post on Music Player and reader not always working) and I am considering upgrading to another type of 7-8 in tablet.

If my NC had the ability to run Google Play with out having to resort to hacks to make it work I would be much more inclined to to stay with B&N.  With our it I am probably going to purchase a Samsung 8.0 Note.  I believe there is much more support for Google/Android products available and a much more modern product.

I don't understand this:  No update to give us google play then the 3 of us will become kindle users.

I understand this: Shifting to Samsung.

                              *****

If you don't like B&N not adding Google Play Store to Nook Color, why would you shift to Kindle which doesn't have Google Play Store?

Shouldn't it be a shift to Samsung or Google Nexus 7?

Sure, rooting my NC is an option, but after a couple of years it would be a bit of an effort to archive everything, wipe the slate and lose the Nook apps I already own, etc. So far I've been using the dual boot off the SD slot with good results, which means I've been grabbing my android apps from Amazon. As I've said, it seems pretty crazy for B&N's policy to force me to use Amazon to get Android apps (and in this case the one I want isn't even available there).

I don't follow you thinking here. Google is no more B&N's friend than Amazon. Getting apps from Google is no more difficult than getting apps from Amazon once you've rooted your device successfully. If you're installing apps from Amazon, why can't you install apps from Google? I never had issues on my rooted NCs.

This stomping out the door because they won't update your 2 year old device is silly. The NC didn't have GoPS on day one. It still doesn't. Nothing has changed. Buying a Kindle to spite B&N makes even less sense. If you want a full multi-function tablet with support for Google Play access, buy one! There are plenty of cost-competitive competitors, but not from Amazon.

Unless you've got a lot invested in B&N features, if you just want to read books occasionally, buy a tablet and put a decent ebook reader app on it. You can still read books and most magazines from B&N (and others).

The NC still works fine as a basic reader. If you want a more general purpose tablet, albeit an old and slow one, put Cyanogenmod on it. You have plenty of choices.
